MOBO Awards
The Music Of Black Origin Awards ( MOBO ) are an annually given British music prize, which is given to performers of music from the field of "Black Music" (music produced or inspired by blacks and their musical traditions from Africa and the African diaspora as well as African-American or - Caribbean music), whereby the origin or nationality of the artist can be arbitrary. It was founded in 1996 by Kanya King , who was then an employee of a television station and who financed the first award with her own money. She later received the MBE (which has Ghanaian-Irish roots herself) for founding the MOBO Awards . The award ceremony takes place on an annual show in September, which mostly takes place in London and is broadcast on British television (BBC). In 2004, for example, the ceremony took place in the Royal Albert Hall and in 2007 in the O2 in Greenwich . In 2009 it took place for the first time outside of London in Glasgow .
The prize is awarded in different categories (e.g. world music, jazz, reggae, soul / rhythm and blues, hip-hop, gospel, African music, DJs), but a prize is not awarded annually in every category. For example, the jazz category was deleted for the first time in 2006 (the organizers, in their own words, wanted to concentrate on “urban music” due to the limited TV broadcasting time, which also led to protests, including from Courtney Pine .) In 2007 and 2008, the Jazz Award was won again awarded (among others to Courtney Pine, Lizz Wright and YolanDa Brown in 2008 and to Soweto Kinch , Dee Dee Bridgewater , Wynton Marsalis 2007). Common categories are e.g. B. Best Group, Best Song, Best Video, Best UK Male / Female, Best UK Newcomer, Best International Male / Female or Best International Act.
Award winners
Kanya King started the MOBO Awards in 1996 with the aim of establishing a platform that encompasses all black music styles including hip-hop, R&B and reggae. When she could not mobilize enough financial support, she took out a mortgage on her house to finance it.
