Lizz Wright (born January 22, 1980 in Hahira , Georgia ) is an American jazz singer .
biography
Wright was born the daughter of a preacher . As a child she sang in her father's church choir and received piano lessons. At the age of 14 she began to be interested in gospel , jazz and blues music . After graduating from high school , Wright began studying singing at Georgia State University in Atlanta, continuing in New York and Vancouver .
In 2000 Wright became a member of the vocal ensemble In the Spirit and quickly became known. After taking part in a Billie Holiday commemorative contest, she was offered a recording deal with Verve Music Group in 2002 .
On June 23, 2003, Wright's debut album Salt was released , which contains five self-composed pieces and which helped her break through. Not only did it reach number 4 on the jazz album charts in the United States, it was also in the charts in Europe. Her second, no less successful album Dreaming Wide Awake followed in 2005. In 2008, the third album The Orchard was released . Both came into the top 3 of the US jazz charts. Lizz Wright was to be seen on a first concert tour in Germany in April 2008, in 2011 at the JazzFest Berlin ; In 2012 she also gave concerts in Germany. In addition to her own projects, Wright repeatedly worked with other artists such as u. a. Joe Sample , Danilo Pérez , Kip Hanrahan or David Sanborn together. In November 2013 she toured Germany as a supporting act for Gregory Porter . In July 2016 she appeared in the opening act for Van Morrison at the Jazzopen Stuttgart .
Together with Angélique Kidjo and Cécile McLorin Salvant , she is part of the Sing The Truth project . Under the artistic direction of drummer Terri Lyne Carrington , the musicians dedicate themselves to the work of committed women such as Odetta , Billie Holiday , Miriam Makeba and others.
