Kip Hanrahan

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Kip Hanrahan (born December 9, 1954 in the Bronx , New York City ) is an American music producer and percussionist.

Live and act

Hanrahan, who first came into contact with contemporary jazz as Carla Bley's assistant , plays an unusual role in most of the records he produces, which he himself compares to that of a film director. He gathers musicians and concepts that he conducts insofar as he intervenes in the musical happening (e.g. causes the percussionists to begin with a solo passage or the pianist to play the transition to another piece). He combines soloists from avant-garde jazz (such as Don Pullen , David Murray , Jamaaladeen Tacuma , Carmen Lundy or Steve Swallow ) with funk musicians from New Orleans such as Allen Toussaint , Leo Nocentelli ( The Meters ) or Charles Neville (Neville Brothers), with rock musicians like Sting or Jack Bruce and percussionists from the Latin Jazz scene such as Andy Gonzalez , Milton Cardona , Robby Ameen and Horacio “El Negro” Hernandez . In some cases he has worked with poets such as Ishmael Reed and Paul Haines (the writer of Escalator over the Hill ).

Hanrahan has also produced notable albums with the Tango Nuevo composer Astor Piazzolla and with musicians from Hanrahan's circle such as Arto Lindsay and Alfredo Triff , and presented them on his “American Clavé” label .

His album Desire Develops at Edge was on the list in 1998 "Records That Set the World on Fire (While No One What Listening) 100" by The Wire added.
