Robby Ameen

Robby Ameen (born December 7, 1960 in New Haven (Connecticut) ) is an American drummer who is an important drummer, especially in Latin jazz .

Live and act

Ameen, who comes from a Lebanese family, attended numerous jazz clubs in neighboring New York as a teenager . In high school he was tutored by Ed Blackwell ; in college, Fred Hinger taught him classical percussion . Then he studied literature at Yale University . During this time he was active in the local jazz and salsa scene .

After graduating, he moved to New York in the early 1980s, where he worked with Eddie Palmieri since 1982 and became a member of the bands of Dave Valentin and Dizzy Gillespie , on whose albums New Faces (1984) and Endlessly (1987) he can be heard . Since 1987, Kip Hanrahan has brought him to numerous of his projects. He also went to the studio with Hilton Ruiz , Daniel Ponce , Earl Klugh , Scott Cossu , Mongo Santamaría , Steve Swallow ( Swallow 1991), Ramsey Lewis , Carly Simon and Conrad Herwig . With Rubén Blades he directed Seis del Solar , which produced the albums Decision and Alternate Roots . The album Todos Vuelven Live , which was recorded during a reunion of the band, received a Latin Grammy in 2012 . Together with Horacio "El Negro" Hernández he presented several recordings; The album Days in the Life followed under his own name in 2009 .

He also went on tour with Willie Colón , Paquito D'Rivera , Gato Barbieri and Jack Bruce and was also seen with Ruben Blades in 1984 at the Rockpalast . He accompanied Marc Anthony at his first solo concert at Madison Square Garden . He was also the drummer in Paul Simon's production The Capeman . He performed with Michael Riessler at the Donaueschinger Musiktage in 1993 ( Momentum Mobile ) and can also be heard on his productions Honig und Asche and Big Circle .

Ameen co-authored the textbook Funkifying the Clave with Lincoln Goines : Afro Cuban Grooves for Bass and Drums ; an instructional video was created based on this. He also gave numerous workshops.
