Horacio Hernández
Horacio "El Negro" Hernández (born April 24, 1963 in Havana ) is a Cuban drummer and percussionist . He made a decisive contribution to fusing Cuban rhythms with current jazz and rock music .
Live and act
Hernández comes from a musical family: his grandfather played traditional Cuban music as a trumpeter, including for the Septeto Nacional . His father was a well-known music journalist who presented jazz programs on the radio , his brothers Papito, Kike and Felo Hernández are bassists . He studied at the music faculty of the Escuela Nacional de Arte (National Art School) and became a master student of Enrique Plá , the drummer of Irakere . From 1986 he was one of the most important studio musicians in Cuba.
He became internationally known as the companion of Gonzalo Rubalcaba . In 1990 he applied for political asylum in Italy while on tour . There he founded the Latin jazz sextet Tercer Mundo together with Javier Girotto . He also played and taught at the “Timba” drum center in Rome . He moved from Italy to New York City , where a few days after his arrival he was hired by Paquito D'Rivera to record the album Forty Years of Cuban Jam Sessions . He then worked with Michel Camilo , as well as with Dave Valentin and with the TropiJazz All-Stars . He has also been involved in the recording of several Grammy- awarded albums , such as Carlos Santana's Supernatural (1999), Alejandro Sanz ' No es lo mismo (2003) and Eddie Palmieri's Listen here (2005). As a member of the band Roy Hargroves Crisol , he won his first Grammy in 1997 for the album Habana and his second for Michel Camilo's album Live at the Blue Note , recorded together with Camilo and bassist Charles Flores.
Together with Robby Ameen , he presented two records. Since 2004 he has performed with his band Italuba , which was also nominated for a Grammy, and since 2011 with The New World Order . He has made several solo appearances at the Modern Drummer's Festival. He has worked repeatedly with Kip Hanrahan and has also recorded with numerous musicians such as Jack Bruce , Joanne Brackeen , Gary Burton , David Kinkade , Uli Lenz and David Sánchez . In 2012 he could be heard with the WDR Big Band Cologne in the program A Night In Havana .
