David Sánchez (born September 9, 1968 in Guaynabo , Puerto Rico ) is a Puerto Rican musician ( tenor and soprano saxophone , flute ) of modern jazz and especially Latin jazz .

Live and act

Sánchez had been playing the conga since he was eight before switching to the saxophone at the age of twelve . He attended the Escuela Libre de Música in San Juan , where he continued his saxophone training and studied flute and clarinet. In 1986 and 1987 he studied psychology at the Universidad de Puerto Rico in Rio Píedras . In 1988 his application was accepted at Rutgers University in New Jersey , where he studied with Kenny Barron , Ted Dunbar and John Purcell . He also worked in the bands of Danilo Pérez ,Hilton Ruiz , Claudio Roditi , Paquito D'Rivera and Daniel Ponce . In 1989 Dizzy Gillespie brought him to his United Nations Orchestra ; In 1991 he took part in his Live the Future tour with Miriam Makeba . He also undertook extensive tours with smaller formations Gillespies.

After Gillespie's death he was one of the founding members of Slide Hamptons JazzMasters , worked in a duo with Eddie Palmieri , McCoy Tyner , Roy Haynes as well as the SFJazz Collective and the Lincoln Center Jazz Orchestra. He also founded his own quintet and based himself more and more on his solo career. Roy Hargrove , Tom Harrell , Kenny Garrett and Cassandra Wilson were involved in the recordings under his own name ; his albums "Obsesión" (1998), "Melaza" (2000) and "Travesia" (2002), which reflect the rhythmic fundamentals and often the themes of Puerto Rican music, were nominated for a Grammy .

He has also performed with musicians such as Kenny Barron, Jimmy Heath , Jerome Richardson , Hank Jones , Ray Drummond , Elvin Jones , Ray Brown , Charlie Sepulveda , Ryan Kisor , Danilo Pérez , Hilton Ruiz and Chucho Valdés . He was also involved in recordings by Rachel Z , Kenny Drew Jr. , Kip Hanrahan , Charlie Haden , Giovanni Hidalgo , Barbara Dennerlein , Dave Valentin , Arturo Sandoval , Leon Parker and the Mingus Big Band . In 2003 he went on a European tour with the pianist Gonzalo Rubalcaba and in 2004 accompanied Dee Dee Bridgewater on her world tour Latin Landscapes . He was also on tour with Pat Metheny's trio .

Sánchez gives workshops and master classes and has taught as visiting professor at the Peabody Conservatory , the Conservatory of Puerto Rico and the Indiana University Music School . In 2005/06 he was artist-in-residence at the Georgia State University Music School . According to Richard Cook , he strives for clarity and complexity on his instrument, playing with a Rollins-like sound in extraordinary beats.

In 2005 Sánchez received the Latin Grammy of the Latin Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences for his album Coral . At the end of 2019, his album Carib was nominated for the 2020 Grammy Awards .
