David Joseph Valentin (born April 29, 1952 in Bronx , New York City , † March 8, 2017 ) was an American Latin jazz flutist .

Live and act

At the age of nine, Valentin, whose parents come from Puerto Rico , learned to play bongos and congas and was twelve years old to play in New York's Latin clubs . It was not until he was 18 that he began to learn the flute . His flute teacher, Hubert Laws , advised him not to learn the saxophone because of his attractive approach to the flute. He graduated from the Bronx Community College .

In 1977 he was involved in the first recordings (with the group of Ricardo Marrero). Producers Dave Grusin and Larry Rosen built him on the GRP label as a popular artist in the USA. Valentin released more than 15 albums under his own name, combining pop music, R&B, Brazilian music and Latin jazz to create a sleek and catchy form of crossover jazz. In 2002 he played the album The Gathering as main soloist with the Caribbean Jazz Project , which won the Grammy Award for Best Latin Jazz Album in 2003.

The documentary Calle 54 , which was about the Latin jazz scene in the USA, showed him performing with Tito Puente . His last albums World on a String (2005) and Come Fly with Me (2006) were released on Highnote . In 2006 he was nominated for the Latin Grammy Award . In his last album, Pure Imagination (2011), he recorded five flutes using overdubbing techniques . After a stroke in 2012, Valentin could no longer perform.
