David "Dave" Grusin (born June 26, 1934 in Littleton , Colorado ) is an American film composer , jazz pianist, arranger, producer and band leader.

Live and act

Grusin studied at the University of Colorado , where he played with Terry Gibbs , Art Pepper , Anita O'Day and Johnny Smith . In 1959 he went to New York and became a companion and arranger for Andy Williams . In 1966, Grusin was the musical director and arranger a. a. also the Caterina Valente show for 2 years and lived in Amsterdam at that time. As early as 1960 he could be heard on Benny Goodman records and in 1962 he settled in Los Angeles . Here he played and arranged for Sarah Vaughan , Quincy Jones and Carmen McRae, among others . In the mid-1970s he played keyboard with Gerry Mulligan and Lee Ritenour . At this time, together with Larry Rosen , he produced albums with musicians such as Earl Klugh and Patti Austin for labels such as Blue Note Records or CTI Records ; In 1982 he founded the label GRP Records (Grusin Rosen Productions) with Rosen , which developed into an important label for contemporary jazz and fusion and was particularly successful in the smooth jazz sector . Grusin also ran the label's all-star big band. During the 1980s and 1990s, further recordings from fusion to pop followed, sometimes with a symphony orchestra .

Grusin also composed and produced film scores, some of which he won an Oscar or a Grammy for: In 1989 he wrote the soundtrack for The Fabulous Baker Boys , in 1990 in Havana , in 1999 for the film Encounter of Fate . He also produced the soundtrack for Die Firma . He has also received several awards as an arranger. He received a total of eight Grammys from 1986, including 2003 for his instrumental arrangement of Mean Old Man for James Taylor . His score for the drama Am Golden See (1981) was voted one of the 25 best American film compositions of all time by the American Film Institute . His work includes more than 100 film productions.

In addition to GRP, he has published with Columbia , Sheffield Lab and PolyGram . His brother Don Grusin (* 1941) is also a jazz pianist and composer. Dave Grusin has a son named Stuart.
