Littleton [ ˈlɪtlˌtən ] is a southern suburb of Denver , Colorado in the United States . Its population was 41,737 at the time of the 2010 United States Census ; it was 21st in the state . The city's administration is organized as a Home Rule Municipality . Littleton is the county seat of Arapahoe County , the urban area is partly in Jefferson County and Douglas County .

history
Littleton is named in memory of the surveyor and engineer Richard Sullivan Little, who settled there with his wife Angeline in 1862. In 1890, the now 245 residents of Littleton voted for the official formation of the city of Littleton. It was officially founded on March 13, 1890.

The place gained notoriety through the Littleton School Massacre at Columbine High School on April 20, 1999, in which 17-year-old Dylan Klebold and 18-year-old Eric Harris shot twelve classmates, a teacher, and then themselves. In fact, the school is not in Littleton, but in neighboring Columbine , an unincorporated area in Jefferson County, which has the same zip code.

At the time of the United States Census 2000, 40,340 people lived in the city. The population density was 1152 people per km ². There were 18,084 housing units at an average of 516.4 per km². Littleton's population was 91.77% White , 1.16% African American , 0.73% Native American , 1.66% Asian , 0.06% Pacific Islander , 2.67% said they belonged to other groups, and 1, 95% named two or more groups. 8.45% of the population declared to be Hispanics or Latinos of any race.
The residents of Littleton were distributed in 17,313 households out of which 28.0% were living in children under 18 years of age. 47.3% of the households are married, 9.2% had a female head of the household without a husband and 40.0% did not form families. 33.3% of households were made up of individuals and someone lived in 11.1% of all households aged 65 years or older. The average household size was 2.29 and the average family size was 2.96.
The urban population was divided into 23.3% minors, 8.2% 18–24 year olds, 30.1% 25–44 year olds, 24.2% 45–64 year olds and 14.2% aged 65 and over or more. The median age was 39 years. For every 100 women there were 94.5 men. For every 100 women over 18, there were 91.0 men.
