Highlands Ranch is a census-designated place in Douglas County of the US state Colorado . It has around 96,700 inhabitants (as of 2010), making it the twelfth largest town in the state of Colorado. The geographic coordinates are 39 ° 33 'north latitude and 39 ° 33' west longitude. The area of ​​the city is 61.0 km².

history

Today's urban area was originally settled by Indians . The area was popular with traveling tribes such as the Ute , Cheyenne, and the Arapaho .

In 1682 the French explorer Robert Cavelier de La Salle claimed the area and named it "Louisiana". Spaniards took over the area in 1763 and returned it to France in 1802. The place was part of the Louisiana Purchase Treaty between the United States and France in 1803.

An expedition by Stephen Harriman Long reached the area in 1820.

In 1859, people from the Denver area began to settle . These settlements were not permanent, because there were floods again and again. It wasn't until 1870 that the first official settler, Curtis H. Field, settled.
