The Douglas County [ dʌgləs ] is a county in the central part of the US state of Colorado . The county seat is Castle Rock .

geography

The southwestern part of the county is crossed by the Rampart Range , the easternmost mountain range of the Rocky Mountains . This densely forested mountain landscape is separated by the South Platte from the Front Range and at the same time forms the border to the neighboring district of Jefferson . Like the southern parts of the Front Range, the Rampart Range has been declared a Pike National Forest.

It is located south of the Denver metropolitan area and is enclosed by the districts of Arapahoe in the north, Elbert in the east, El Paso and Teller in the south and Jefferson in the west.

history

Douglas, named after the US politician Stephen Arnold Douglas , has existed in its current district boundaries since 1874, but was one of the original in 1861 with the administrative headquarters of Franktown (1861–63) and California Ranch (1863–74) on the newly created Colorado Territory 17 administrative units. While the boundaries in the west on the South Platte River to Jefferson and those in the north to Arapahoe never changed, Douglas lost the entire eastern region, which originally extended to the state border of Colorado.

population

Douglas' population is growing rapidly. In the years from 1990 to 2005, the number of inhabitants more than quadrupled from around 60,000 to over 250,000. Even if the four cities of Parker, Castle Rock, Lone Tree and Larkspur also recorded high growth, this development is mainly due to the new development area around the Highlands Ranch . It lies on the northernmost border of Douglas - south of Littleton and east of Chatfield Lake . The residential area adjoining the Denver metropolitan area has no urban status, but with around 83,000 inhabitants is by far the largest town in Douglas.
