Las Animas County ( Las Animas for short) is a county in the state of Colorado in the United States . In 2000 the population was 15,207. The county seat is Trinidad .

The county is one of the most sparsely populated counties in Colorado. About 60 percent of the population lives in Trinidad (with about 9,000 inhabitants). The other localities have fewer than 1,000 inhabitants.

The county is named after the Las Animas River, whose former Spanish name is El Rio de los Animas Perdidas en Purgatorio : River of the Lost Souls of Purgatory.

Interstate highway 25 runs through the county . In the ghost town of Ludlow stands the Ludlow Monument , which commemorates the Ludlow massacre in April 1914. At that time, around 1,200 miners from the former Ludlow miners' settlement were on strike. 25 people, including women and children, were killed in the Colorado National Guard operation.

The county had a population of 15,207 as of the 2000 census . There were 6173 households and 4092 families. The population density was 1 person per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 82.63 percent white, 0.39 percent African American, 2.54 percent Native American, 0.37 percent Asian, 0.20 percent of residents from the Pacific island area and 10.03 percent from other ethnic groups Groups; 3.83 percent were descended from two or more races. 41.45 percent of the total population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.

Of the 6,173 households, 28.8 percent had children and adolescents under the age of 18 living with them. 49.9 percent were married couples living together, 11.6 percent were single mothers. 33.7 percent were not families. 29.7 percent were single households and 14.3 percent had people aged 65 or over. The average household size was 2.40 and the average family size was 2.97 people.

For the entire county, the population was composed of 24.2 percent of residents under the age of 18, 7.9 percent between 18 and 24 years of age, 24.0 percent between 25 and 44 years of age, 25.9 percent between 45 and 64 years of age 18.0 percent were 65 years of age or over. The median age was 41 years. For every 100 females there were 95.8 males, and for every 100 females aged 18 and over there were 93.7 males.

The median income for a household in the city was $ 28,273 , and the median income for a family was $ 34,072. Males had a median income of $ 27,182 versus $ 20,891 women. The per capita income was $ 16,829. 17.3 percent of the population and 14.0 percent of families lived below the poverty line. This included 20.0 percent of the population under the age of 18 and 17.2 percent of the population aged 65 and over.
