The Saguache County is a county in the central part of the US state of Colorado . The county seat is Saguache .

history

Saguache County was formed in 1866 from parts of Costilla County and Lake County . Saguache means “blue earth” or “water on blue earth” in the language of the Ute Indians .

geography

In the county is the Crestone Peak , on the border with Custer County, which is also represented by the San Luis Valley. The Crestone Peak is the largest mountain of the so-called Crestones (four "four-thousanders", Crestone Peak, Crestone Needle, Kit Carson Mountain, Humboldt Peak). Another large elevation is Mount Ouray at 4,253 meters southwest of Salida (Colorado) . In a clockwise direction, the county is bounded by Gunnison to the northwest and north, Chaffee to the north, Fremont to the northwest, Custer to the east, Huerfano to the southeast, Alamosa and Rio Grande to the south, Mineral to the southwest, and Hinsdale to the west. The Great Sand Dunes National Park is located in the county as well as in Alamosa County .

In the south of the county is the Baca National Wildlife Refuge (game reserve). To the west of the county the Gunnison National Forest (National Forest ).

According to the 2000 census , the county had 5,917 people. There were 2,300 households and 1,557 families. The population density was 1 person per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 71.29 percent white, 0.12 percent African American, 2.06 percent Native American, 0.46 percent Asian, 0.00 percent from the Pacific island area and 23.00 percent from other ethnic groups Groups; 3.08 percent were descended from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 45.26 percent of the total population.

Of the 2,300 households, 33.4 percent had children and adolescents under the age of 18 living with them. 52.7 percent were married couples living together, 11.0 percent were single mothers. 32.3 percent were not families. 26.9 percent were single households and 7.7 percent had people aged 65 or over. The average household size was 2.56 and the average family size was 3.15.

For the entire county, the population was composed of 28.4 percent of residents under the age of 18, 7.9 percent between 18 and 24 years of age, 26.0 percent between 25 and 44 years of age, and 26.9 percent between 45 and 64 years of age 10.8 percent were 65 years of age or over. The median age was 37 years. For every 100 females there were 101.7 males, for every 100 females aged 18 and over there were 99.7 males.

The median income for a household in the county is $ 25,495 , and the median income for a family is $ 29,405. Males had a median income of $ 25,158 versus $ 18,862 for females. The per capita income was $ 13,121. 22.6 percent of the population and 18.7 percent of families are below the poverty line. This included 27.6 percent of the population under the age of 18 and 12.5 percent of the population aged 65 and over.
