The Phillips County is an administrative unit ( county ) in northeastern US state of Colorado . The county seat is in the largest township, Holyoke .
geography
The county borders the state of Nebraska to the east . In a counterclockwise direction, the county is surrounded by Sedgwick County in the north, Logan County in the northwest and west, Yuma County and in the east (Nebraska) Chase County and Perkins County .
history
The county was separated from Logan County in 1889. It was named after RO Phillips who was the managing director of the Lincoln Land Company.
tourism
Numerous campsites and hunting opportunities as well as golf courses break through the otherwise very agricultural area. In particular, the cultivation of grain determines the rural picture. The plateaus of northwest Colorado provide opportunities for pheasant hunting .

As of the 2000 census , the county had 4,480 people. There were 1,781 households and 1,239 families. The population density was 3 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 93.04 percent white, 0.20 percent African American, 0.29 percent Native American, 0.40 percent Asian, 0.02 percent from the Pacific island area and 4.71 percent from other ethnic groups Groups; 1.34 percent were descended from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race was 11.76 percent of the total population.
Of the 1,781 households, 32.9 percent had children and young people under the age of 18 living with them. 61.2 percent were married couples living together, 5.6 percent were single mothers. 30.4 percent were not families. 27.5 percent were single households and 14.3 percent had people aged 65 or over. The average household size was 2.47 and the average family size was 3.01.
For the entire county, the population was composed of 26.9 percent of residents under 18 years of age, 6.3 percent between 18 and 24 years of age, 25.3 percent between 25 and 44 years of age, 22.2 percent between 45 and 64 years of age 19.4 percent were 65 years of age or over. The average age was 40 years. For every 100 females there were 93.4 males, and for every 100 females aged 18 and over there were 90.5 males.
The median income for a household in the county is $ 32,177 , and the median income for a family is $ 38,144. Males had a median income of $ 30,095 versus $ 18,682 for females. The per capita income was $ 16,394. 11.6 percent of the population and 8.8 percent of families are below the poverty line. These included 14.7 percent of the population under the age of 18 and 7.2 percent of the population aged 65 and over.
