Archuleta County is an administrative unit ( county ) in the southwest of the US state Colorado , which is completely traversed by the San Juan Mountains on the heights of the Colorado Plateau . Less than 10,000 people live in the county bordering the US state of New Mexico , which is enclosed within Colorado by the counties of La Plata , Hinsdale , Mineral , Rio Grande and Conejos . The county seat is Pagosa Springs .

According to the 2000 census , the county had 9,898 people. There were 3,980 households and 2,873 families. The population density was 3 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 88.33 percent white, 0.35 percent African American, 1.40 percent Native American, 0.31 percent Asian, 0.03 percent from the Pacific island area and 6.97 percent from other ethnic groups Groups; 2.60 percent were descended from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 16.76 percent of the population.
Of the 3,980 households, 31.6 percent had children and young people under the age of 18 living with them. 59.8 percent were married couples living together, 8.2 percent were single mothers. 27.8 percent were not families. 22.1 percent were single households and 6.0 percent had people aged 65 or over. The average household size was 2.47 and the average family size was 2.89 people.
For the entire county, the population was composed of 25.3 percent of residents under 18 years of age, 6.3 percent between 18 and 24 years of age, 26.1 percent between 25 and 44 years of age, 30.4 percent between 45 and 64 years of age 11.9 percent were 65 years of age or over. The median age was 41 years. For every 100 females there were 102.7 males, for every 100 females aged 18 and over there were 99.5 males.
The median income for a household in the county is $ 37,901 , and the median income for a family is $ 43,259. Males had a median income of $ 29,521 versus $ 21,851 for females. The per capita income was $ 21,683. 11.7 percent of the population and 9.0 percent of families are below the poverty line. This included 13.0 percent of the population under the age of 18 and 6.6 percent of the population aged 65 and over.
Places in Archuleta County
The only town in the district - with just around 1,600 inhabitants - is Pagosa Springs , which is also the home of the administrative center. All other places are only officially established settlements for the census ( census-designated place ). On average, fewer than 500 people live in them.
