Archuleta County is an administrative unit ( county ) in the southwest of the US state Colorado , which is completely traversed by the San Juan Mountains on the heights of the Colorado Plateau . Less than 10,000 people live in the county bordering the US state of New Mexico , which is enclosed within Colorado by the counties of La Plata , Hinsdale , Mineral , Rio Grande and Conejos . The county seat is Pagosa Springs .

According to the 2000 census , the county had 9,898 people. There were 3,980 households and 2,873 families. The population density was 3 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 88.33 percent white, 0.35 percent African American, 1.40 percent Native American, 0.31 percent Asian, 0.03 percent from the Pacific island area and 6.97 percent from other ethnic groups Groups; 2.60 percent were descended from two or more races. Places in Archuleta County

The only town in the district - with just around 1,600 inhabitants - is Pagosa Springs , which is also the home of the administrative center. All other places are only officially established settlements for the census ( census-designated place ). On average, fewer than 500 people live in them.
