Gilpin County [ ˈgɪlpən ] is an administrative unit ( county ) in the northern part of the US state Colorado . The county seat is Central City .

geography

The county is located in north-central Colorado, in the front mountain range of the Rocky Mountains and is enclosed by the districts of Boulder in the north, Jefferson in the east, Clear Creek in the south and Grand in the west.

history

The county named after William Gilpin is one of the 17 original administrative units of the Colorado Territory , which was created in 1861 and, along with neighboring Clear Creek, the only district that still exists today within its former boundaries.

As of the 2000 census , the county had 4,757 people. There were 2,043 households and 1,264 families. The population density was 12 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 94.37 percent white, 0.53 percent African American, 0.82 percent Native American, 0.69 percent Asian, 0.19 percent of residents from the Pacific island area and 1.53 percent from other ethnic groups Groups; 1.87 percent were descended from two or more races. 4.25 percent of the total population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.

Of the 2,043 households, 26.9 percent had children and adolescents under the age of 18 living with them. 53.0 percent were married couples living together, 5.7 percent were single mothers. 38.1 percent were not families. 26.8 percent were single households and 3.7 percent had people aged 65 or over. The average household size was 2.32 and the average family size was 2.81 people.

For the entire county, the population was composed of 21.1 percent of residents under 18 years of age, 5.8 percent between 18 and 24 years of age, 37.4 percent between 25 and 44 years of age, 30.0 percent between 45 and 64 years of age 5.7 percent were 65 years of age or over. The median age was 38 years. For every 100 females there were 112.7 males, for every 100 females aged 18 and over there were 116.1 males.

The median income for a household in the county is $ 51,942 , and the median income for a family is $ 61,859. Males had a median income of $ 38,560 versus $ 30,820 for females. The per capita income was $ 26,148. 4.0 percent of the population and 1.0 percent of families lived below the poverty line. This included 1.4 percent of the population under the age of 18 and 6.1 percent of the population aged 65 and over.
