The El Paso County [ ˌɛlˈpæsoʊ ] ( Spanish for The Mountain Pass ) is a county in the central part of the US state Colorado . The county seat is Colorado Springs .
geography
El Paso County comprises in the west the eastern mountainous landscape of the Rampart Range , at the transition to the Plains one of the outermost mountain ranges of the Rocky Mountains . At its foot lies the city of Colorado Springs , an important economic and tourist center of Colorado. There are still some small towns south of Colorado Springs along Fountain Creek , while the east of El Paso is barely populated.
It is enclosed in a clockwise direction by the boroughs of Elbert (northeast), Lincoln , Pueblo , Fremont , Teller and Douglas . In the southeast, El Paso also joins the Crowley administrative district , without having a common border with it.
history
El Paso County is one of the 17 original administrative units that emerged in the new Colorado Territory in 1861, but lost the western territories to the newly formed Teller County in 1899 .

As of the 2000 census , the county had 516,929 people. There were 192,409 households and 133,916 families. The population density was 94 inhabitants per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 81.19 percent white, 6.51 percent African American, 0.91 percent Native American, 2.53 percent Asian, 0.24 percent of residents from the Pacific island area and 4.70 percent from other ethnic groups Groups; 3.91 percent were descended from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 11.30 percent of the population.
Of the 192,409 households, 36.7 percent had children and young people under the age of 18 living with them. 55.6 percent were married couples living together, 10.2 percent were single mothers. 30.4 percent were not families. 23.9 percent were single households and 6.1 percent had people aged 65 years or over. The average household size was 2.61 and the average family size was 3.11.
For the entire county, the population was composed of 27.6 percent of residents under the age of 18, 10.5 percent between 18 and 24 years of age, 32.5 percent between 25 and 44 years of age, and 20.7 percent between 45 and 64 years of age 8.7 percent were 65 years of age or over. The median age was 33 years. For every 100 females there were 100.9 males, and for every 100 females aged 18 and over there were 98.8 males.
The median income for a household in the county is $ 46,844 , and the median income for a family is $ 53,995. Males had a median income of $ 35,940 versus $ 26,252 for females. The per capita income was $ 22,005. 8.0 percent of the population and 5.7 percent of families are below the poverty line. This included 10.0 percent of the population under the age of 18 and 6.9 percent of the population aged 65 and over.

There are some significant US military bases in El Paso County, including Fort Carson (location of the 4th Infantry Division of the United States Army ), Schriever Air Force Base , Peterson Air Force Base ( NORAD / USNORTHCOM ), Cheyenne Mountain Complex and the United States Air Force Academy .
