Schriever Air Force Base , a United States Air Force base , is about ten miles east of Peterson AFB near Colorado Springs , Colorado . It is home to the 50th Space Wing , which is responsible for the satellites of the US Department of Defense , including the Global Positioning System .

The Space Innovation and Development Center of the Air Force Space Command and the Joint National Integration Center of the Missile Defense Agency , responsible for defense against ballistic missiles (ICBM), are also located here. The Air Force Space Battlelab , also based at Schriever AFB , u. a. responsible for the development and testing of space weapons , gained considerably in importance through the reformulation of the National Space Policy by George W. Bush in August 2006 (published in early October 2006).

history

The former Falcon Air Force Base was renamed Schriever Air Force Base on June 5, 1998 in honor of General a. D. Bernard A. Schriever , a pioneer of the US ICBM program. It was the first and so far unique case that a US air force base was named after a living person.
