In the same year the airport was converted into a military airfield and during the Second World War pilots were trained there on the Lockheed P-38 and other aircraft. After the end of the war, civilian use was resumed, and in 1948 the Peterson Air Force Base was set up on the site in parallel .

After a phase in which the facilities were used by the military and civilian at the same time, the construction of a new civil reception building on the west side began in 1966 and was expanded several times in the 1970s and 1980s. The current terminal was opened in October 1994 after two years of construction.
