After this visit, the El Paso Aero Club began planning for the El Paso Municipal Airport , which was inaugurated on September 8, 1928. In 1929 Standard Airlines , an airline that was incorporated into American Airlines in 1930, started operating from El Paso. In the same year, Standard Airlines moved to an area southeast of Municipal Airport, which was subsequently referred to as Standard Airport . In 1936 the city of El Paso took over the Standard Airport and referred to it as El Paso Municipal Airport, the previously used site was given up.
During World War II, the airport was used by the United States Army Air Forces and the United States Navy , but remained open to civil air traffic.
In 1950 the City Council decided to change the name of the airport to El Paso International Airport .
