The US Highway 62 runs from the northeastern United States in the Southwest. The southwestern end point is in at the Mexican border lies El Paso in Texas , the northeast in Niagara Falls in upstate New York near the at the Canadian border nearby Niagara Falls .

In its western section, US Highway 62 partly follows the Ozark Trail with the historic bridge over the Canadian River in Newcastle (Oklahoma) .

course

Texas and New Mexico

Highway 62 runs through Texas on two sections, interrupted by a stretch through New Mexico . The highway begins in El Paso right on the border with Mexico and heads east together with US Highway 180 out of the city. The road leads along the southeast edge of the Guadalupe Mountains National Park and then reaches New Mexico.

Highway 62 reaches the southeast edge of the Carlsbad Caverns National Park with its famous stalactite caves before reaching the city of Carlsbad . To the west of it, the state of Texas is reached again behind Hobbs . US Highway 385 crosses in Seminole . Highway 62 turns northeast here and reaches Lubbock , where Highway 62 intersects Interstate 27 with US Highway 87 and US Highway 84, which are on the same route .

Via Lorenzo , Highway 62 leads to Ralls , where the road turns north to continue in an easterly direction in Floydada from the confluence of US Highway 70 . The Texas State Highway 70 crosses in Matador , from Paducah the road runs in a northerly direction congruent with the US Highway 83 .

After Childress , where US Highway 287 intersects, there is a junction to the east and after 15 km you reach the border between Texas and Oklahoma .

Oklahoma

Highway 62 runs east through southwest Oklahoma. 52 km after the junction with US Highway 183 , Highway 62 turns north in Lawton and runs 13 km congruent with Interstate 44 and US Highway 281 to the northern outskirts. From there, the route continues via Apache to Anadarko , where the road turns east and the congruent course with Highway 281 ends. In Chickasha , Highway 62 meets Interstate 44 and US Highways 81 and 277 again . Together with the highways 62 and 277 now run in a north-easterly direction to Newcastle , where the Canadian River is crossed. From here it is 30 km north to Oklahoma City , on which Highway 62 mostly coincides with Interstate 44.

Highway 62 leaves Oklahoma City in an easterly direction and leads via Choctaw , Harrah , the intersection with US Highway 177 , Meeker and the intersection with US Highway 377 in Prague to Okemah . There, Highway 62 joins Interstate 40 and runs together with it in an easterly direction. After 29 km he leaves the interstate again to join US Highway 75 from Henryetta in a northerly direction to Okmulgee . In an easterly direction, the path now leads to Muskogee , which is reached together with US Highway 64 . In the city, the Arkansas River is crossed after the intersection with US Highway 69 .

In an easterly direction, Tahlequah is reached after about 40 km . Further east cruises at Westville the US Highway 59 before the border between Oklahoma and Arkansas is achieved.

Arkansas

The Highway 62 runs in Arkansas first about 40 km in an easterly direction until it meets the jointly running Interstate 540 and US Highway 71 at Fayetteville . Together with these, Highway 62 now runs in a northerly direction via Springdale to Rogers , where the highway leaves the shared route and heads east through the Ozark Plateau . US Highway 412 joins behind Green Forest and runs eastwards together with Highway 62. In Harrison the US Highway 65 crosses offset and leads via Mountain Home to the confluence of US Highway 167 and a little later US Highway 63 at Cherokee Village . In Imboden , Highway 62 leaves the joint route with US Highways 63 and 412 and reaches Pocahontas .

From there the road continues in an easterly direction together with US Highway 67 to Corning , where Highway 67 leaves the common course in a northerly direction. In Piggott opens US Highway 49 and Highway 62 turns 3 km behind the city from north to other 9, the border between the states and Arkansas km Missouri to achieve.

Missouri

The road leads north-east via Campbell to Malden . From there, the highway 32 km leads to the east and meets with Howard Ville near the Mississippi River on the US Highway 61 . On a common route, the highways run through New Madrid and then north to Sikeston . From there, Highway 62 runs alone again to unite with US Highway 60 behind Charleston . After 13 miles, Highway 62 reaches the west bank of the Mississippi River and crosses a bridge from Missouri to Illinois .

Between Malden and New Madrid, today's Highway 62 was originally defined as Route 82 in 1922 and later renamed to today's Highway 62. The section west of Malden was still unnamed until the establishment of Highway 62.

Illinois

Highway 62 (together with US Highway 60 ) runs through Illinois through an approximately 1 km long section between the bridges from Missouri over the Mississippi River and from Illinois together with US Highway 51 over the Ohio River to Kentucky south of the city of Cairo .

Kentucky

In Kentucky, Highway 62 initially runs together with Highway 51 to the southeast. In Bardwell , Highway 62 leaves the joint section to the east. In Paducah , Highway 62 again reaches the Ohio River at the mouth of the Tennessee River.

Then Highway 62 leads through the touristic area at the reservoirs of the Tennessee River. About Eddyville , Princeton , the junction with US Highway 41 , Central City with the junction of US Highway 431 and Leitchfield , Elizabethtown is reached near Fort Knox .

US Highway 150 crosses in Bardstown . Highway 62 now continues in an easterly direction that gradually turns northeast. US Highway 127 crosses in Lawrenceburg . After crossing Interstate 64 , Georgetown is reached, where US Highway 25 crosses. After leaving the city, Highway 62 intersects Interstate 75 . Via Cynthiana at the intersection of US Highway 27 , Highway 62 leads to Maysville , where the border between the states of Kentucky and Ohio is reached on the bridge over the Ohio River .

Ohio

Highway 62 runs over the Simon Kenton Memorial Bridge together with US Highway 68 to Ohio. In Ripley , both highways leave the Ohio River together. Shortly thereafter, Highway 62 continues alone and reaches Hillsboro . In the city, Highway 62 runs north and intersects US Highway 50 in the city center . US Highway 35 crosses 42 km north in the city of Washington Court House . From here, the road runs northeast again, crosses Interstate 71 and reaches Columbus, the capital of Ohio. There Highway 62 meets Interstate 70 and US Highways 23 , 33 and 40 .

In the further course in a northeastern direction, Highway 62 crosses US Highway 36 and together with US Highway 30 reaches the city of Canton (Ohio) . The road then runs through Alliance and Salem to Interstate 76 . In the further course, Youngstown is reached after another 20 km after the intersection with Interstate 80, the border between the states of Ohio and Pennsylvania .

It is planned to expand the section between Alliance and Salem with connection to Interstate 80 as Hubbard Arterial, similar to a motorway.

Pennsylvania

In Sharon , Highway 62 comes to Pennsylvania. At the Ohio-Pennsylvania border, the signage changes from east to west to north to south. Highway 62 runs through Mercer at the intersection of US Highway 19 to Franklin , where US Highway 322 intersects. Here the road enters the valley of the Allegheny River , on the banks of which Highway 62 runs for a distance of 72 km. In Oil City , the river is crossed for the first time. Further northeast, the Allegheny National Forest is reached, along the western edge of which Highway 62 now runs. Together with US Highway 6 , Highway 62 reaches the city of Warren , where Highway 6 turns south again. From Warren it is another 20 km north to the border between the states of Pennsylvania and New York .

new York

Coming from the south the Chautauqua County is reached first. There is Interstate 86 crosses. Further north-north-east, Highway 62 leads via Gowanda to Hamburg . A few kilometers later, a bridge crosses Interstate 90 ( New York State Thruway ). Further north, the highway runs through Lackawana and reaches Buffalo , the second largest city in New York State.

In Buffalo, Interstate 190 is crossed. North of the city of Buffalo, Highway 62 runs through Amherst and under Interstate 290 . In the further course the Erie Canal is crossed and the city of Wheatfield is reached. Later the Niagara Falls International Airport is passed and Interstate 190 is again passed. Then Highway 62 enters the urban area of Niagara Falls and splits into Highway 62 proper and Business US Route 62 . Contrary to the predominant direction of travel of Highway 62, the road leads through Niagara Falls in a westerly direction. Upon reaching the Rainbow Bridge , which leads to Canada , the end of US Highway 62 is reached.
