The highway crosses the Wisconsin border where Iowa, Illinois and Wisconsin meet. Then it runs towards Dodgeville . In Madison it intersects with Interstate 90 . In Fond du Lac , it then crosses with US Highway 41 . It eventually ends on US Highway 10 in Manitowoc . The trunk road roughly follows a north-easterly course.

course

Iowa

US Highway 151 starts at a junction with Interstate 80 in a remote part of Iowa, near Williamsburg and Conroy . It then runs through the area around the Amana Colonies . The highway then meets US Highway 30 and US Highway 218 and runs on a bypass around Cedar Rapids while Business Route 151 traverses the city. The highway then separates from the other two and continues towards Dubuque as an expressway. On this 105 km long section 151 crosses US some major rivers, including Wapsipinicon River and Maquoketa River and then into the Driftless Area , where the highway in the vicinity of the Dubuque Regional Airport km, about 11 south of Dubuque with US Highway 61 united . They are joined by US Highway 52 5 km south of the city . Together these streets then lead to White Street in Dubuque.

Dubuque-Madison

US 151 then crosses together with US 61, the Mississippi River into Wisconsin. After crossing the Dubuque-Wisconsin Bridge , the route travels due east about 1.5 km and cuts the waterfront before turning north to the western terminus of Wisconsin Highway 11 . Wisconsin Highway 35 and the Great River Road join US 151 north at this intersection. In this area, the highway is built like a motorway. In a northerly direction the route leads to the junction with Eagle Point Road, alternating settlements and farmland. The Eagle Point Road joins from the west. At this point the motorway-like character of the road ends. The route runs northwest past Kieler . At Dickeyville, US 61, WIS 35 and Great River Road turn north and lead into town. US 151 leads east past Dickeville and descends into a valley cut northeast of it, where it runs almost two kilometers parallel to the Little Platte River, before rising again to the ridge on the other side of the valley. US 151 then approaches Platteville , where a nearly 10 km long section begins, which can only be traveled by motor vehicles. At the end of this section is the junction with Wisconsin Highway 126 , which provides access to Belmont . From then on, US Highway 151 heads northeast, crosses the Cottage Inn Branch and descends several times into smaller valleys, two of them before the Mineral Point bypass and another two at the bypass of this city .

Wisconsin Highway 23 joins US 151 at the end of this bypass and splits the route to the first exit in Dodgeville. Another short stretch of freeway begins there and ends at the junction with US Highway 18 . US 18 and US 151 lead eastwards from there.

Behind Dodgeville, the route leads through an undulating landscape in which fields and meadows alternate with small forest areas. The highway runs past Ridgeway and Barneveld to Mount Horeb . At the junction with Wisconsin Highway 78 , another short freeway-like section begins, which ends again directly south of the city, where it leads through residential areas. On the rest of the way, intersections at the same level and intersections of different levels alternate until the route at Verona is expanded again as a motorway. This section leads south past the city, to which four exits lead. Then the freeway turns into a four-lane inner-city street, Verona Road, which leads through Fitchburg to Madison. After crossing the West Beltline Highway, US 18 and US 151 connect and flow into US Highways 12 and 14, which also run there together .

Madison Metropolitan Area

The four US highways have a common route for about five kilometers up to Park Street. There US 14 turns south and US 151 leads north into central Madison. US 151 follows South Park Street, runs west of Monona Bay and north-east for about 450 m on West Washington Avenue, then leads north on Proudlit Street and North Shore Drive to John Nolen Drive. The street passes under the Monona Terrace Convention Center and passes downtown south and east. US 151 then follows South Blair Street for three blocks until it turns northeast on East Washington Avenue. US 151 leaves the city on East Washington Avenue. After about five kilometers, Wisconsin turns State Route 30 and a little further northeast US 151 is crossed by the trunk route US 51.

Madison to Fond du Lac

Exit the US 45 in Fond du Lac

At an interstate with Interstate 39 , Interstate 90 and Interstate 94 , a section of US 151 that has been expanded to form a freeway begins . This section leads in a north-easterly direction through industrial areas, which are eventually replaced by residential areas. The route bypasses Sun Prairie west and north and then runs through farmland towards Columbus. Approximately in the middle of the bypass of the place Wisconsin State Route 16 passes under US 151. US 151 becomes a level intersection expressway after junction with Wisconsin State Route 73 at the end of the Columbus Bypass. At Beaver Dam, which the highway passes in the southeast, US 151 becomes an intersection-free street again, which runs along the edge of the residential development. There is, however, a level crossing on East Burnett Street . To the north-east of the city there are again cross-roads at the same level, before another motorway-like section begins at Waupun . US 151 then continues eastward as a four-lane expressway, past Fond du Lac to the south and east. On this section, junction points at the same level and free of intersections alternate; US Highway 41 and Wisconsin State Route 23 intersect here. The Wisconsin Department of Transport (WisDOT) is currently examining expansion measures for two sections. On the one hand, this involves expanding the Fond du Lacs bypass with the ultimate goal of completely converting it into a motorway. The other study examines the expansion between the intersection with WIS 73 in Columbus and WIS 49 in Waupun.

Fond du Lac to Manitowoc

The endpoint of US 151 is on US 10 in Manitowoc

The multi-lane section of the US 151 ends after the route turns away from the Fond du Lac and follows the east bank of Lake Winnebago for about half its length. US 151 then turns east at the intersection with Wisconsin State Route 55 . Within Chilton , the route briefly overlaps with Wisconsin State Route 32 and Wisconsin State Route 57 . Then the highway runs through farmland, crosses Interstate 43 and reaches Manitowoc. There it ends on US Highway 10 , just a few blocks from the SS Badger ferry terminal .

history

US 151 about 13 km south of Dubuque. A scene from the film Field of Dreams was shot around here.

US 151 was one of the original highways designated in 1926. Back then, the route only ran from Fond du Lac to Madison, where US 151 ended at the intersection of Western Avenue and Main Street. But as early as 1934, the highway was extended in a south-westerly direction to Cedar Rapids , Iowa, and the then US Route 118 ( Dodgeville - Dickeyville ) in full and US Highway 161 between Dubuque and Cedar Rapids; between Cedar Rapids and Keokuk , US 161 became US Highway 218 . The intersection with US 30 / US 218 became the southern end point. In the 1940s, the highway was led in a north-easterly direction to Manitowoc.

The Eagle Point Bridge , through which US 61 and US 151 was connected to Wisconsin, was closed in 1969 and the two highways received a modified route over the Julien Dubuque Bridge , together with US Highway 20 between Dubuque and East Dubuque , Illinois . US 151 then overlapped with Illinois State Route 35 and Wisconsin State Route 35 northbound. The Dubuque-Wisconsin Bridge was opened in 1982, the old Eagle Point Bridge was demolished and US 61 / US 151 were passed over the new bridge.

At its southern end, the highway was extended again in 1981 when US 30 became a bypass. 1986 moved US 151 to bypass Cedar Rapids on Iowa State Route 13 and US 30. The route through town is now signposted as Business US 151, although the official name is State Route 922. The last change to the routing of US 151 was made in 1989 when the south end was moved to Exit 225 of Interstate 80. This extension follows the route of the former Wisconsin State Route 149 . US 151 became the main road through the Amana Colonies .
