The US Highway 49 (short US 49 ) is a highway in the United States of America . It begins on Highway 90 in Gulfport , Mississippi, and ends after 830 kilometers on Highway 62 in Piggott , Arkansas .

Mississippi

From Gulfport on the coast to the Gulf of Mexico , the highway runs north and meets Interstate 10 in the north of the city . North of Wiggins it crosses the De Soto National Forest . After an intersection with US Highway 98 , which has been expanded into a freeway and is used as a feeder to Interstate 59 , US 49 runs through the city center of Hattiesburg and meets US Highway 11 . In the north of the city it crosses I-59 and runs in a north-westerly direction.

In the south of the greater Jackson area , the capital of the state, the US Highway 49 first uses the route of Interstate 20 and then Interstate 220 . He meets Interstate 55 and US Highway 51 . The road does not run through the center of Jackson and leaves the greater area again in the northwest.

North of the city of Yazoo City , the highway divides into an eastern and a western route, which are referred to as US Highway 49E and US Highway 49W , respectively. The eastern route leads in a north-easterly direction to Greenwood and then in a north-west direction to Tutwiler , where the two sections meet again. The western section runs via Indianola to Tutwiler.

In the south of Clarksdale the US 49 forms a bypass route together with US Highway 61 and shortly afterwards meets US Highway 278 . From Clarksdale it leads north to the town of Rich together with the US 61 . Shortly afterwards, the road reaches the state of Arkansas with the crossing of the Mississippi River .

Arkansas

The first city in Arkansas on US Highway 49 is West Helena . The highway then runs first in a westerly and later in a northerly direction. In Brinkley , it meets Interstate 40 and US Highways 63 and 70 . The road leaves Brinkley in a northeast direction and is intersected by US Highway 64 at Fair Oaks .

In the south of Jonesboro , the US 49 forms a bypass route together with the US 63 and leads through the eastern part of the city. The highway passes Arkansas State University to the west and shortly afterwards leaves the city in a northeast direction. In Paragould it meets US Highway 412 . In northeast Arkansas, US Highway 49 ends 830 kilometers in Piggott on US Highway 62.
