The road begins in the south in the city of Walterboro in the state of South Carolina on the alternative route of US Highway 17 ( US 17 Alt ). From there it runs in a north-northeast direction parallel to Interstate 95 to Lake Marion , where it joins Interstate 95 at Santee . From there, US 15, I-95 and US 301 are merged and lead across the lake. The US 15 only continues on its own and independently from the town of Summerton, about 18 km further north-east as the crow flies. The road now leads overland north to the city of Sumter and then to Interstate 20 , from where it takes a northeast direction. From Society Hill the highway merges with US 401 and both run towards the North Carolina border.

North Carolina

Both roads cross Interstate 74 and lead through the city of Laurinburg , where Highway 401 splits off to the north and US 15 together with US Highway 501 leads directly north again. At Aberdeen is additionally includes the US Highway 1 to, so that the US Route 15 here extends within the map with two other highways on a track. Outside the town, Highway 1 branches off to the northeast and US 15 and US 501 lead north to Carthage and then northeast until they meet US 1 again for a short section. US 15 and 501 then continue north, about 40 km west of the capital Raleigh and through the city of Chapel Hill , crossing the I-40 and intersecting the city of Durham . Northwest of these you meet Interstate 85 , which is merged with US 70 in this section . The US 501 and US 70 branch off to the north and northeast of the city, so that the US 15 now runs northeast together with the I-80. US Route 15 branches off behind Falls Lake and now runs independently parallel to the interstate through various villages. In front of the city of Oxford, it crosses the motorway and only passes through smaller towns until the border with Virginia.

Virginia

At Culpeper in Virginia

Shortly after the border, the highway crosses the Roanoke River , which is dammed up here to form the John H. Kerr Reservoir , and runs through very rural areas throughout most of the state. At the place Wylliesburg he meets the Highway 360 and leaves it again at Keysville . Further north near Farmville , the road is identical to US Route 460 for about 7 km , crosses US Highway 60 15 miles north of it , then crosses the James River and crosses US Highway 250 and Interstate 64 in about the middle of Virginia . From the city of Culpeper the road will be merged with US Highway 29 and a few kilometers further on Highway 17 will join. From Warrenton this leaves the route again and shortly before the intersection of Interstate 66 with Highway 29 as well. US Highway 15 now heads north approximately 50 km west of downtown Washington, DC , crosses US 50 and passes the city of Leesburg . With the crossing of the Potomac River , the US 15 also crosses the border with the state of Maryland.

Maryland

A few kilometers after the border meets the highway to the US Route 340 , crossing the Interstate 70 and meets shortly before the city Frederick on US Highway 40 . The US 15 then forms the Frederick Highway , a four-lane bypass road around the city. Then the route continues, four lanes, only through meadows and forests to the border with Pennsylvania.

Pennsylvania

In the Allegheny Mountains of Pennsylvania

The road continues to be expanded to four lanes past Gettysburg , where it crosses US Highway 30 to the capital Harrisburg , where I-76 , Highway 11 and Interstate 81 are crossed. Only then is the route back to two lanes. It now runs along the Susquehanna River and crosses US Highway 22 and 522 . After Milton the Interstate 80 is crossed and the river at Williamsport . There the road is synonymous with the I-180 and Highway 220 for a few kilometers . After that, the route initially runs along Lycoming Creek and through hilly landscape to the north, where US Highway 6 is crossed before the border with New York State .

new York

From the border, US Highway 15 also forms Interstate 99 and runs about 20 km along the Tioga River to Painted Post , where the highway ends after 1274 km in I-86 and New York Route 17 .
