In its course, US Highway 4 crosses, for example, the Saratoga National Historical Park . In the town of Hudson Falls , State Route 32 separates from US 4, which continues to run in a northeastern direction and passes Adirondack State Park to the west . From the town of Whitehall , the highway heads east and after about 15 kilometers reaches the border with the neighboring state of Vermont.

Vermont

From the border, the US Highway runs as a bypass road with freeway standard around places like Fair Haven or West Rutland in an easterly direction. The old route of the highway is used by the Vermont State Route 4A . The freeway ends after 30 kilometers south of Rutland on US Highway 7 . The US 4 then leads northwards to downtown Rutland and leaves it in a northeasterly direction. In the area of the parish of Killington , the highway reaches its northernmost point with the junction of Vermont State Route 100 .

US Highway 4 meets Interstate 89 to the west of Hartford and Interstate 91 to the east of the village , but without a direct connection to it. In the city of White River Junction , it shares the route with US Highway 5 for about one kilometer. In the northeast of the city, the road reaches the state of New Hampshire by crossing the Connecticut River .

New Hampshire

With West Lebanon the highway passes through the first city in New Hampshire. To the west and east it crosses Interstate 89 twice. From the junction of New Hampshire State Route 118 in Canaan , the road leads south and passes smaller towns such as Danbury , Andover and Salisbury . In Boscawen it is crossed by US Highway 3 . From Exit 17 east of Penacook , US Highway 4 initially uses the route of Interstate 93 , which is also referred to in this section as the Senator Styles Bridges Highway , and runs parallel to the Merrimack River .

From Concord , it then divides the route of Interstate 393 together with US Highway 202 along the entire length. After the end of I-393, the route is also used by New Hampshire State Route 9 and runs east. In this constitution, the highway passes through Northwood and Harvey Lake . In Northwood , the US 202 and NH 9 separate from US Highway 4. North of Great Bay , it begins to use the New Hampshire State Route 16, which is also known as Spaulding Turnpike on this route . In the northwest of Portsmouth, US 4 ends at a cross with Interstate 95, which is called the New Hampshire Turnpike on this toll section , as well as US Highway 1 and New Hampshire Route 16 after a total of 402 kilometers.
