Canaan is a city in the US state of New Hampshire . In 2017, 3882 inhabitants were counted. The city probably got its name from early settlers who came from Canaan , Connecticut .

geography

Canaan is located on Canaan Stret Lake in the Upper Valley region of New Hampshire in Grafton County . The administrative area includes the core town of Canaan Center, Canaan Street and West Canaan. Canaan borders Orange to the east , Grafton to the south, Enfield to the south, Hanover to the west and Lyme and Dorchester to the north .

history

Canaan was founded in 1761 by Benning Wentworth . Since not all registered settlers stayed at the site, a new charter was issued in 1769. In 1847 the railroad reached the city. According to the Canaan Historical Society, Daniel Webster was on board the first train. The construction of the railroad triggered an economic boom. Regular traffic ended in 1965, but the last train did not run until 1982 when the line was used as an alternative route after an incident near Brattleboro . On September 15, 1907, a freight train collided with a passenger train near the city , killing 26 people.

In March 1835 the Noyes Academy opened with forty-two students, fourteen of whom were of African descent. This made the school the first of its kind in the USA. After the Second World War, the Cardigan Mountain School, which derives its name from Mount Cardigan , was built near the former site of the Noyes Academy . Other former educational institutions were the Canaan College and the Union Academy.

Administration and public institutions

As a town , Canaan does not have a mayor. Instead, three elected city councils are responsible for managing the community. The fire brigade and emergency medical service are provided by volunteers, the Canaan Town Library is subordinate to the community. The closest hospitals are Darthmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center or Alice Peck Day Memorial Hospital, both in Lebanon .

education

Along with Dorchester, Enfield, Grafton and Orange, Canaan is part of the Mascoma Valley Regional School District, which covers all ages from kindergarten to college. The private Cardigan Mountain School continues to exist in a new location near Canaan Street Lake.

economy

The largest employers are the public school district and the private school, each with over a hundred employees. There are also a number of smaller companies with five to forty employees. Three quarters of the working population commute to work outside of Canaan.

traffic

In Canaan, the NH118 branches off from US 4 . The closest interstate is I-89 at Lebanon. The Lebanon Municipal is also the closest airport there.

Attractions

The Northern Rail Trail was laid out on the former railway line, a cycle and hiking trail that is also open to skiers and snowmobiles in winter and leads from Lebanon to Franklin . In Canaan itself there is the historic meeting house, built in 1793, and the Canaan Historical Museum in the building of the former Noyes Academy. Both are on a walking tour in the Canaan Historic District. Cardigan Mountain State Park with Mount Cardigan is located near Canaan, from whose bare summit one has an unobstructed view over the west of central New Hampshire.
