history

historic kiln in Franconia

Around 1760 the area around the present city began to be called Franconia. It was first mentioned in a document in 1764. The name comes from the fact that the landscape was very reminiscent of Franconian Switzerland in Germany .

Since the city lies on a high-yielding iron vein, iron tools, pig iron and iron bars were manufactured in the region for a long time. The extraction of natural resources began around 1801 and ended around 1884. In 1884, a major fire destroyed the most important production facilities.

The bridge constructions of the late 18th century that are still preserved today are living evidence of the rich supply of raw materials.

A hydropower plant was built around 1870 and the place was then electrified .

population

97% of today's inhabitants of Franconia are descended from Central European ancestors. The proportion of the population of ethnic groups of different origins, for example Asians, Indians and Africans, was well below 1% in the census at the turn of the millennium. This is quite unusual by US standards and is otherwise only similar in own residential parks.

The average income for men is at about 30,000 dollars , for women at 25,000 $ . Eight percent of the local population live on an income below the poverty line .

Artistic reception

The memories of the steel industry still find artistic expression in a well-developed scene of steel drum players in New Hampshire.
