Cannon Mountain is a 1,240-meter-high peak in the White Mountains in the US state of New Hampshire . It is known for its excellent mountain and ice climbing opportunities as well as for the ski area on Cannon Mountain . Until it collapsed in 2003, Cannon Mountain was also the home of the Old Man of the Mountain rock formation.
history
The first major use as a ski area began as early as 1933, making it one of the oldest in North America. In 1938 an aerial tramway was introduced as a ski lift. This lift was the first aerial tramway in the United States. The mountain was the site of the first Alpine Ski World Cup in 1967. In 1972 the name of what was then Profile Mountain was changed to Cannon Mountain .
