Sabal domingensis, also called Hispaniola palmetto , is a species of plant from the genus Sabal within the palm family (Arecaceae). It occurs only on the Caribbean islands of Hispaniola and Cuba .

Vegetative characteristics

Sabal domingensis grows as a palm tree, reaches heights of up to 10 meters and a trunk diameter of 60 centimeters. Sabal domingensis is a fan palm with up to 30 fronds per plant specimen.

Generative characteristics

The inflorescence is branched, curved or drooping and at least as long as the fronds. The black fruit when ripe is pear-shaped with a diameter of 1 and 1.4 centimeters. The shape and size of the fruit are the main characteristics with which Sabal domingensis differs from Sabal causiarum .

Occurrence

Sabal domingensis occurs only on the Caribbean islands of Hispaniola and Cuba . On Hispaniola, Sabal domingensis is found from northwest Haiti to the center of the Dominican Republic . Sabal domingensis is mostly found in the secondary forest at altitudes of 100 to 1000 meters.

Thatched roofs are made from the fronds . Hats, baskets and mats are woven from the fronds.
