Surname

The word "Kuali" comes from the Malaysian and means a small wok , which should be considered a modest but essential cooking item.

history

The initiators of the Kuali Foundation have used the open source movement in general and various projects for the development of community source software in particular as sources of inspiration . Examples include Sakai and uPortal .

Around the turn of the millennium, the administration of Indiana University Bloomington was looking for a software alternative to the financial information system used at the time . The improvement of the old system was excluded, as was the purchase of a proprietary system. One of the reasons against purchasing software was the high cost of at least US $ 20 million. Together with NACUBO and other institutions, it was decided to explore possibilities for a joint in-house development.

After the conclusion in 2004 that the in-house development was possible, various evaluations, partner searches and the implementation of the necessary preparatory work began. Software development was completed in March 2005 thanks to a donation of US $ 2.5 million from the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation . Founding partners were Indiana University Bloomington, the University of Arizona , the University of Hawaii , Michigan State University , San Joaquin Delta Community College , Cornell University , NACUBO and the rSmart Group.

When interest in the project and the resulting Kuali Financial System increased, the development of further software products appeared possible. To facilitate cooperation between the institutions, the Kuali Foundation was founded in 2006, which has since been responsible for financial management and software licensing .

In 2007, Kuali Student was realized, again with a US $ 2.5 million grant from the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation.

In 2013, the Kuali Open Library Environment (OLE) was published, in which the European headquarters of the Joint Library Network , the University Library Center of North Rhine-Westphalia and the University of London Library Systems Association LTD were involved as Kuali members. In 2016, OLE and these European members left the Kuali Foundation and moved to the Open Library Foundation.
