The University Library Center of the State of North Rhine-Westphalia ( hbz ) is a central service and development facility for the university libraries in North Rhine-Westphalia and Rhineland-Palatinate .

History and status

On the basis of contractual agreements, the hbz has been taking on tasks for libraries and institutions inside and outside of North Rhine-Westphalia since 1973. It is based in Cologne .

The hbz network database includes records of over 18 million titles that were created by the participating network libraries or imported using automated processes. In addition, there are over 40 million inventory data from the North Rhine-Westphalian and Rhineland-Palatinate network libraries. The data from the North Rhine-Westphalian Bibliography (NWBib) is also kept in the network database. It is updated at regular intervals with the data from the journal database (ZDB). The bibliographic metadata of the hbz network database is enriched by around 1 million digital objects - especially tables of contents and full texts.

  • The digital library (DigiBib): Portal to the world of knowledge for around 220 libraries, access with online interlibrary loan and document delivery service to the heterogeneous range of information and services of the respective library, possibility of researching more than 450 case databases
  • the link management system DigiLink and the virtual and cooperative information network DigiAuskunft
  • Digital Peer Publishing (DiPP): Offer for hosting quality-checked electronic open access journals
  • Digital content: consortium acquisition of electronic content, central and supra-regional contract management, platform for usage statistics, hosting of databases, customer service and training in usage and research
  • German library statistics (DBS) and Austrian library statistics: annual recording of all important key figures in the areas of equipment, inventory, borrowing, expenditure, finances and staff of public and academic libraries
  • BIX - the library index : nationwide ranking for libraries by the German Library Association (dbv) and hbz in cooperation with BITonline, enables a differentiated performance comparison of libraries
  • Online interlibrary loan: online literature ordering and document delivery service
  • Search area: technical infrastructure solution for efficient retrieval in bibliographic holdings using search engine technology
  • Digitization: Conversion of digital media such as paper books and magazines into digital form with the digitization platforms scantoweb hosted by hbz and MyBib eL® as well as catalog enrichment
  • Storage and management of large quantities of digital objects of all kinds, hosting and archiving of websites as well as long-term archiving of electronic deposit copies, hosting of university publications and document servers
  • Linked Open Data (LOD): Building knowledge and technology for linked data-based services, developments in this area are based on two pillars: Publication of openly licensed data for free use by everyone and cross-domain web standards for the development of new technologies
