hbz network database

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The hbz association database ( synonym : hbz association catalog ) is operated by the university library center of the State of North Rhine-Westphalia (Cologne) and contains the records of around 21 million media titles and 54 million inventory data (as of September 2019) created in cooperative cataloging . 63 university, technical college, state and special libraries from North Rhine-Westphalia and Rhineland-Palatinate as well as well over 1000 institute and departmental libraries are currently actively participating in the hbz network. All types of media files are accessed and made available here. In addition, the North Rhine-Westphalian bibliography and all journals in the journal database are integrated. In addition, there are over 6 million bibliographic records from public libraries .

With the network database and its library services, the hbz supports the libraries in developing their offerings and making them available to their users. The libraries use the added value resulting from the cooperative cataloging and are supported by professional database software.

The libraries can also minimize the effort and costs involved in cataloging through the large amount of external data available. Over 65 million titles, for example from the German National Library and other associations, are available as a basis for media cataloging. In addition, external data from Japan can be accessed for cataloging original written media. For e-books acquired by consortium, metadata is provided and automatically passed on to the local library catalogs in order to minimize the effort and thus the costs for the network libraries connected to the hbz network database in this area as well.

With the help of the hbz network database, it is possible for the libraries to present the complete inventory to their users. For this, not only the data of the respective library are synchronized directly with the local databases of the libraries via interfaces, but also the holdings of the respective library recorded in the journal database (ZDB) are transferred to their catalogs. Users have the option of carrying out a convenient literature search both in the local catalog of their library and via the online catalog of the hbz network database and querying which stocks are available at which location in order to be able to order them via interlibrary loan, if necessary. Another possibility is the research via the digital library (DigiBib), in which the network database is also integrated. In addition, the data from the network database is offered for national research in the Karlsruhe Virtual Catalog (KVK).

Much of the bibliographic data of the hbz association is supplemented with information that goes beyond the bibliographical information, such as B. Tables of contents, cover pictures and forewords enriched in order to give users as specific information as possible about the content of a medium.

The hbz network database is also aimed at institutions outside the network of university libraries in North Rhine-Westphalia and Rhineland-Palatinate. The data of public libraries are made available twice a year in a special database for interlibrary loan. External customers, e.g. B. companies or research institutions can download data from the network database for a fee.

Open data

Since March 2010 some data are under the CC0 license. The entire union catalog has been freely licensed since September 2013. The data is entered in thedatahub and is available both as raw data and linked open data. With lobid.org, the hbz has been operating a Linked Open Data Service including open API on this open data since 2010. Of the three lobid services, lobid-resources is the one that provides the hbz network data.
