Kuali Open Library Environment , or Kuali OLE for short , is an integrated library system aimed primarily at academic libraries . It was developed by HTC Global Services, Inc. on behalf of and according to the specifications of the OLE community. A large part of the development costs come from grants from the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation . OLE is Free / Libre Open Source Software because it is published under the Educational Community License (ECL) Version 2.0, which is an Apache license with a patent clause .

Kuali OLE is web-based and provides various modules for library activities such as acquisition , cataloging and lending . A library catalog is not included, but can be connected.

Modules

The program functionalities required for library work processes are, as is usual with larger library systems, divided into different software modules . All four of these modules can be accessed and operated by library staff in any web browser .

Acquisition module

With the acquisition module ( select and acquire module ), you can select, order, process access and invoice new publications to be acquired, as well as licensing electronic resources.

Cataloging module

The metadata of the media held is managed via the cataloging module ( describe and manage module ). There are three different types of data sets ( records ), depending on whether it is a bibliographic description ( bibliographic ), collected information about local stocks ( holdings () or data at certain specimens item include). MARC and Dublin Core are currently (2015) supported in bibliographic data formats , and EAD , VRA, MODS , METS and BIBFRAME will also be supported in the future . An internal search option is available to the staff to find information that has already been saved, and a number of tools for batch processing to import and export data .

Lending module

The deliver module also offers all common functions. For example, library users are managed in their own data records and, after logging in, can also carry out various actions themselves, such as ordering a medium or extending a loan date.

System integration module

The system integration model ( systems integration module ) connects the other three modules with the middleware Kuali Rice and connects the library system with university-wide systems, such as a campus-wide student administration. Reports and statistics will also be available via this module in the future.

technology

The four library modules are written in version 7 of the Java programming language. In January 2015, the source code comprised around one million lines. The programmers used several hundred freely available Java libraries. As usual, various settings are saved in various configuration and setup files.

The data managed by the Kuali OLE is stored in a relational database , the DocStore or Document Store . So far the database systems MySQL , MariaDB and Oracle are supported, the database is addressed via a database abstraction layer .

The non-user-accessible internal search engine for titles and copies with Apache Solr realized and enables full-text search , highlighting the search text, faceted search , dynamic clustering .

Kuali OLE can also be used to access a knowledge database that does not belong to the system itself , the GOKb . The search engine technology Elasticsearch is used to search for content in the GOKb .

The integration of external systems is made possible by various standard interfaces .

history

Kuali OLE is used at three libraries: since August 2014 at the University of Chicago and at Lehigh University , since April 2015 at the School of Oriental and African Studies at the University of London .

In 2016, the OLE community switched from the Kuali Foundation to the Open Library Foundation in order to continue the development of an integrated library system for academic libraries within the Folio community and on the basis of the Folio software platform.
