Folio ( original spelling FOLIO , from the Latin folium "sheet") is a cloud-capable open source software base for a library management system for academic libraries developed by the international Folio community . Folio has been developed since 2015 by the software company Index Data and financed by EBSCO Information Services , the executable software base has been public since September 2016, an early version with functional library modules has been announced for 2018.

aims

The software should be particularly easy to expand, can be operated either by itself or as a multi-client cloud system, and meet the requirements of academic libraries in the areas of metadata management, acquisition, administration of electronic resources, lending, user administration, system administration and integration. The German library associations GBV and hbz as well as the SOAS have compiled the functional requirements and are being further developed by the Folio community.

The project aims to create an open source alternative to the proprietary cloud systems Alma from Ex Libris and WMS from OCLC .

Code and Architecture

The software code is managed with GitHub , a recorded webinar gives potential software developers an introduction.

Technologies used are Vert.x and JSON for the intermodule communication , React and Redux for the user interface and RAML for the persistence interface.

The software base, known as the “platform”, consists of the construction kit for user interfaces , the “Okapi” message bus for communication between the modules , and a system administration layer including a database . Functional modules such as lending and purchasing will be based on this software.

Surname

In English and German, the name Folio has three meanings in the library sector: In addition to page counting (see Folium ) as opposed to page counting, Folio also denotes a book format and a historical paper format .

The motto “the future of libraries is open”, English for “the future of libraries is open”, was only added later, so Folio is a backronym .

Open Library Foundation

The Open Library Foundation was founded in 2016 to organize and manage finances and copyrights. It is based in the USA and is a non-profit organization there. The community of the Kuali Open Library Environment switched to it in 2016 and left the Kuali Foundation in order to pursue its previous goals with the new Folio software base. Members in German-speaking countries are the library associations GBV and hbz , which are working on the development of a library management system on the new FOLIO platform.

reception

At relevant library conferences and websites, Folio was given ample space for a project presentation and was discussed intensively.
