Steven Funaki Adams (born July 20, 1993 in Rotorua , New Zealand ) is a New Zealand basketball player who has been under contract with the Oklahoma City Thunder in the North American professional league NBA since 2013 . After playing a season for the Wellington Saints in 2011, Adams moved to the United States in 2012 to play college basketball for Pittsburgh . In June 2013 he selected the Thunder with the 12th pick in the 2013 NBA Draft .

Career

Start time

Adams grew up in New Zealand and initially played for the Wellington Saints in the New Zealand basketball league NBL. In his first year he was basketball champion and rookie of the year. He moved to the United States in 2011 for his final senior year of high school and played for Notre Dame Preparatory School. He grew up to be one of the best high school centers in the country and decided to play for the University of Pittsburgh at the college level . In his only college year as a freshman for Pittsburgh, he scored 7.2 points, 6.3 rebounds and 2.0 blocks in 23.4 minutes per game. Then he announced his registration for the NBA draft .

NBA

In the 2013 NBA Draft , Adams was selected 12th by the Oklahoma City Thunder . He was the first New Zealander to be drawn in the first round of the draft. In his first year in the NBA, Adams scored 3.9 points, 4.1 rebounds and 1.3 blocks, earning him an appointment to the NBA All-Rookie Second Team . Since the 2014–15 season, Adams has been an integral part of the Thunderrotation and helps the team with his physical style of play. So he came in the 2015-16 season on 8.0 points and 6.7 rebounds in 25 minutes per game. He also hit 61.3% of his field throws.

In October 2016, Adams signed a $ 100 million four-year deal with the Thunder.

Personal

Adam's father is from England and his mother is from Tonga . He has 17 siblings, including the athlete and Olympic champion Valerie Adams .
