Schröder began playing basketball at the age of eleven, after he was discovered by the professional basketball trainer Liviu Călin on an open space near the Braunschweig Prinzenpark and invited to basketball training. Over the years, he was able to steadily improve his basketball skills and so, in addition to the junior team in the youth basketball league, he was also employed early on in the first division reserve team SUM Baskets Braunschweig in the third-class ProB relay north. When Schröder was 16 years old, his father died of a heart attack, whereupon he changed his previous training attitude after promising his father that he would make it into the NBA.
