Elias John Michael Harris (born July 6, 1989 in Speyer ) is a German basketball player . He was most recently under contract with Brose Bamberg. Harris is a member of the German national basketball team .
Career
The 2.03 m tall and 108 kg heavy Harris started his basketball career at SG TV Dürkheim / BI Speyer and thus also played for the youth teams of the Speyer Basketball Boarding School. Harris, who is considered a great talent, also made the leap into the first team through good performances, for which he was initially active in the 1st regional league. In the 2006/07 season he was even included as a double licensed player in the squad of BG Karlsruhe in the top division of the basketball league , but was not used in any game. With the BIS Baskets promoted to the ProB , Harris, who until 2008 actually played with the junior team of the boarding school in the junior basketball league , developed into a top performer in the men's team , primarily due to his aggressiveness and rebound strength . In his final season ProB 2008/09 Harris was able to achieve an average of 20.9 points and 9.2 rebounds per game.
Together with first division experienced players like Robin Benzing , Harris also took part in the U20 European Championship in July 2009, where he achieved 14.0 points and 6.4 rebounds per game and thus had a large share in the German team's stay in Division A. . These achievements were also a significant reason why national coach Dirk Bauermann then nominated him for the men's European Championship finals in 2009 in Poland, where Harris was used as a supplementary player and scored an average of 2.2 points. The 31-year-old Harris reached his best mark in the group game against Macedonia on August 21, 2009. There he scored 13 points. During the summer break of 2009, Harris then announced his move to the NCAA college league at Gonzaga University , where NBA players such as John Stockton and Ronny Turiaf were trained. On January 14, 2010, Harris set his personal NCAA record of 31 points in the game against Saint Mary's Gaels.
At 2013 NBA draft Harris was not considered. Shortly afterwards he got the chance with the Los Angeles Lakers to recommend himself for a long-term contract in the NBA Summer League . On July 26, 2013, Harris finally signed a two-year deal with the Lakers. At the Lakers, however, Harris could not finally prevail and only came to two short appearances in the NBA, which remained without points. The Lakers therefore decided to let Harris play for the Los Angeles D-Fenders farm team from the NBA Development League . At the end of November 2013, the Lakers parted ways with Harris.
On December 12, 2013 Harris signed a two-year contract with Brose Baskets with a release clause for the NBA next summer. In April 2015, his contract in Bamberg was extended until the end of the 2016/17 season. Harris, who had meanwhile become the captain of the Bamberg team, signed a contract extension with the Bundesliga club in March 2017 until the end of the 2019/20 season. At the beginning of April 2020, he was the only professional in his club to refuse to give up 50 percent of his salary as part of the short-time work registered by Brose Bamberg due to the coronavirus crisis , whereupon he was accused by Bamberg's supervisory board chairman Michael Stoschek of failing to live up to his role as a role model. Harris' lawyer contradicted this view and called the allegations Stoschek "wrong in content". Harris, who has been German champion three times and cup winners twice with Bamberg since 2013, left the club in summer 2020 after his contract was not renewed.
