BG Karlsruhe is a basketball team from Karlsruhe .
history
In 1993, the Basketball departments of the two neighboring clubs merged FC Südstern 06 Karlsruhe and Post Südstadt Karlsruhe (PSC) for reasons of power concentration and were since then as bourgeois society right under the name BG ( B asketball- G ommunity) Post / Südstern Karlsruhe on.
In 1995 (two years after it was founded) the BG Post / Südstern Karlsruhe celebrated its promotion to the 2nd basketball division . This was followed by two mixed seasons, but the 2000/01 season was able to establish oneself at the top of the 2nd basketball division. Thanks to its constant performance, the BG was finally able to celebrate its greatest success to date in 2003, namely the championship of the 2nd BBL and thus promotion to the highest German division, the basketball Bundesliga . The master coach was Ivan Vojtko from Slovakia .
In the first year in the Bundesliga, they started as BG Iceline Karlsruhe after the team had been removed from the main club and the name was supplemented by a sponsor name. In December 2003 Vojtko resigned from his coaching position, at that time Karlsruhe was penultimate in the table. Stefan Koch was his successor, but resigned his office in February 2004 due to differences of opinion with the club's management. Uwe Sauer was signed as the new coach. Under his leadership, the risk of relegation was dispelled, as a new league player ultimately only missed the play-offs due to a defeat on the last match day against Bayer Leverkusen and reached tenth place. The following year was similar and they only just missed the play-offs.
In the following two years, following the departure of the main sponsor and some personnel changes in the management, a downward trend followed. In October 2005 coach Sauer was dismissed and replaced by the previous assistant coach, the former national player Horst Schmitz . Schmitz led the team in the 2005/06 season to stay in the Bundesliga. In December 2006 - the BG was again in a relegation battle - Schmitz, who had previously been assigned Pat Elzie as an assistant, resigned as head coach. Israeli Erez Bittman became the new coach, Elzie left the club shortly afterwards. After eleven defeats in a row, the BG and Bittman separated again in March 2007, at which point it was already clear that the 2006/07 season would end with relegation to the 2. Bundesliga ProA . After separating from Bittman, the Austrian Stefan Höllerl was appointed as the new head coach, who led the season to an end and under whose direction there should then be a rebuilding in the second division. But that did not happen because Höllerl did not consider his ideas and the requirements at the BG to be compatible and in May 2007 declared his departure.
After relegation, attempts were made to establish themselves long-term with German players in the league by working with young talent and promoting talent from the region with playing time in the ProA and in the junior basketball Bundesliga team founded in 2006 .
In July 2008, the new managing director, Julie Hüvel, succeeded Matthias Dischler and announced that she wanted to make BG better known in the region with new concepts and to get it back on the road to success.
At the beginning of September 2008, the BG also succeeded in carrying out what is probably the most spectacular transfer coup in the ProA: namely the return of the former German national player Rouven Roessler , who had played in the Bundesliga basketball league for the Gießen 46ers the two years before and in both years the best German points collector in the basketball Bundesliga was: 2007 (11.8 points per person), 2008 (13.6 points per point). Roessler was given a two-year contract. This working paper was extended in January 2010 by means of a player option until the end of the 2013/2014 season.
In terms of sport, however, the BG was rarely able to meet its own requirements and not play for promotion to the BBL. The 2013/2014 season led the club to the bottom of the ProA table. With just seven wins and 23 defeats, the sporting descent into the ProB was clear at the end of the season . Following the season, the club announced the separation of managing director and coach Torsten Daume . The post of managing director was temporarily taken over by Matthias Dischler, who had previously worked for BG in this position.
Daume's successor as head coach of BG Karlsruhe was Ralf Rehberger , who previously worked as an assistant coach for s.Oliver Baskets from Würzburg , for the 2014/15 season . At the beginning of 2015, the BG separated from Rehberger and appointed Nenad Josipović as head coach, who already held the position in the 2007/08 season. In October 2016, the BG separated from coach Josipovic and shortly thereafter presented the American Jibril Hodges as his successor.
In May 2017, the BG was refused the license for the 2nd Bundesliga ProB with regard to the 2017/18 season. The BG's objection was also unsuccessful, the court of arbitration for the 2nd Bundesliga confirmed the decision not to grant the Karlsruhe team the right to participate in the 2017/18 ProB season. After the forced relegation, the BG agreed a cooperation with the BAC 55 Hockenheim and received a starting place in the first regional league under the name BG Eisbären with a view to the 2017/18 season. The new coach and successor to Hodges was Mario Dugandzic in the summer of 2017 . Dugandzic left Karlsruhe in the Christmas break 2017/18 for Baunach and was replaced by the Serb Goran Miljevic. At the end of the season, the team was relegated to the 2nd regional league with 10 wins and 18 losses.
In the 2018/19 season, the team reported under the name BG Karlsruhe Basketball Youngstars for the game operation of the 2nd regional league. In September 2018, insolvency proceedings were initiated against the operating company BG Karlsruhe Basketball GmbH, and the company was dissolved when the proceedings were initiated. The team's game operations continued in a new club: the BG Karlsruhe Basketball Youngstars eV had previously applied for membership in the Baden-Württemberg Basketball Association on September 15, 2018. Matthias Dischler, the long-time “doer” of the BG Karlsruhe, was also involved in the work in the new club and also took over as coach during the 2018/19 season.
In 2019/20 Nenad Josipović was again coach, the team reached twelfth place in the 2nd regional league.

Game Room
The BG Karlsruhe began in the Eichelgartenhalle in Karlsruhe-Rüppurr . A sports hall built in 1980 which can hold up to 950 spectators.
Already during the 2002/03 season, when the crowd for the Eichelgartenhalle was too big, they moved to the much larger Europahalle . The Europahalle, which is predestined for basketball just because of group games at the 1985 and 1993 European basketball championships, international basketball games, BBL All-Star Games and, finally, performances by the legendary Harlem Globetrotters , can hold up to 4,809 visitors for basketball games.
The Friedrich List Hall with 800 seats became the BG venue from the 2014/2015 season.
