2. Basketball Bundesliga 2000/01

The 2000/2001 season is the 26th season of the 2. Basketball Bundesliga . The regular season began on October 2, 2000 and ended on April 21, 2001.

Before the start of the season, the league was increased from twelve to sixteen teams in two seasons (north and south). This eliminated a so-called "postseason" with promotion and relegation rounds. The regular season was played in “everyone against everyone” mode with a return leg. The champions of the two seasons rose to the basketball Bundesliga 2001/02 , while the two worst teams in the final table were relegated to the respective regional leagues.

Season Notes

• TV 1860 Lich was relegated from the basketball Bundesliga 1999/2000 to the southern group and was replaced by the promoted and northern champion 2000 Oldenburger TB . Also qualified as a climber, TuS Lichterfelde , a cooperation partner of the German champions Alba Berlin , decided not to go up and played in the northern group. The southern champion 2000 Consors Falke Nürnberg did not get a license for the first basketball league (BBL) and remained in the southern group, so that ratiopharm Ulm could remain in the BBL as a relegated athlete.
• Newcomers from the regional leagues were SVD 49 Dortmund , SV Halle , UBC Münster , BG Wolfenbüttel , BG Zehlendorf and finally the Schwelmer Baskets after the TV 1864 Salzkotten withdrew their team from the second division before the start of the season. The Hannover Flyers had already withdrawn their team from the northern group during the preseason and were automatically relegated.
• BBC Bayreuth , TSV 1883 Grünberg and BSG Basket Ludwigsburg rose to the group south . After the penultimate of the pre-season Bayern Munich waived a league stay, the bottom of the table and athletic relegated TSV 1860 Ansbach moved up and stayed in the league.
• At the end of the season, SER Rhöndorf (North) and WiredMinds Tübingen (South) became champions of the 2nd Bundesliga .
• The championship in Group North was only decided on the last match day, when SER Rhöndorf , later Dragons Rhöndorf , was able to defeat TSV Quakenbrück , later Artland Dragons , in the Artländer hall after two extra times with 100: 97. This championship was particularly controversial, as it had become known in advance that the Rhöndorfer were looking to sell the promotion rights to the Regionalliga West champions Cologne 99ers due to a lack of hall infrastructure .
