history

The General Sports Club Theresianum Mainz was founded in 1983 on the initiative of the former headmaster of the Theresianum , senior studies director Alois Nilles.

The basketball department was founded in 1988 together with the basketball department of Sportfreunde Budenheim. In 1992 the competitive sport started on its own.

The first women's team was promoted to the 2nd Bundesliga in 2003 and has played there since then, with the exception of the 2006/2007 (1st Bundesliga) and 2017/2018 (Regionalliga) seasons.

The first men's team played in the Regionalliga Südwest / Nord since 1995. In the years 1999-2001 and in the 2006/2007 season, the team played in the second Bundesliga south. Since the introduction of the two-track regional league, the ASC was represented in the 1st regional league until its relegation in 2019. This was only interrupted by the 2008/2009 season when the team played in the ProB and was able to keep the class with 11th place, but the team was withdrawn to the regional league for financial reasons.

The ASC is known for good youth work. Many of the players in the first teams came from their own youth. The best-known examples of this are the later national players Patrick Heckmann and Katharina Schnitzler.

Teams

In the 2019/2020 season, the ASC Theresianum will provide three senior and five youth basketball teams from its female members. The first women's team plays in the 2nd DBBL South.

In the male basketball division, five senior teams competed - the first in the 2nd Regionalliga Südwest. Of the eight male youth teams, the U16 played in the youth basketball league (JBBL).
