Paul Wilski (born March 26, 1868 in Danzig , † March 13, 1939 in Aachen ) was a German geodesist and surveyor .

Life

After completing his studies, Wilski began as a land surveyor in the civil service from 1890 and at the turn of the century was also part of the Reich Limes Commission under Theodor Mommsen . Through this he came into contact with the archaeologist Friedrich Hiller von Gaertringen , who accepted him into his team for the excavations of Ancient Thera on Santorin . Before he returned to Thera again, he took on a position as an assistant at the Agricultural Academy Bonn-Poppelsdorf in 1899 and completed his doctorate in 1902. phil. at the University of Rostock . After his return to Thera, he specifically researched the city's history and the meteorological conditions on the island. He then published these research results, among other things, in his first major work, which was included in the third and fourth volumes of the five-volume work by his mentor von Gaertringen. Wilski also designed new topographical maps of Thera and the Milesian peninsula at that time .

Finally, in 1905, Wilski moved to the Freiberg Bergakademie as an associate professor, and later as a professor for geodesy and mine studies . During the First World War , he accepted a call to RWTH Aachen University in 1916 , where he took over the main areas of double plumbing with multiple weights and the possibility of centric plumbing as a full professor of mine and field measurements . In addition, he took over the management of the state earthquake station in Aachen. During his time in Aachen, among other things, he summarized his research results in a new work, which was translated into several languages as a two-volume " Textbook of Markshaft Studies " and distributed worldwide.

Wilski, whose research in Aachen concentrated in particular on the shaft soldering process, was considered to be the inventor of the "Wilski'schen shaft soldering device" named after him, the "Wilski'schen prism " and the "Wilski'schen clarity measure ". On April 21, 1920 Wilski was admitted to the German Academy of Sciences Leopoldina . In 1935 he retired according to his age.

Paul Wilski found his final resting place in the Aachen forest cemetery .
