The TG Würzburg ( TGW or Turngemeinde Würzburg von 1848 eV ) is a sports club founded in Würzburg in 1848 .

history

The Würzburg gymnastics community was founded on May 18, 1848 in the Café Klinger in Würzburg . After it was banned in 1853, it was re-established in 1861.

The association consists of departments for aerobics , badminton , basketball , fencing , handball , karate , athletics , Rhönrad , taekwondo , tennis , table tennis , gymnastics and volleyball .

Women's team

The women's basketball team became South German champions for the first time on January 10, 1965 with the national player Helga Nowitzki, and won this title four times again in the following years. In 1968 the basketball team of the TG Würzburg reached 5th place in the championship finals. In 1971 the women qualified for the newly founded basketball league and missed relegation a year later.

Men's team

The men's basketball team rose in the 1967/68 season as South German champions in the Bundesliga and rose again in the following season. For the 1977/78 season, the basketball players of the TG Würzburg qualified for the 2nd Bundesliga. In the 1978/79 season , however, the team rose again.

In the 2013/14 season, the "Blue Baskets" won the championship in the Regionalliga Südost and thus promotion to ProB Süd. In 2020, the team was withdrawn from the 2nd Bundesliga ProB following the 2019/20 season, which ended prematurely due to the spread of the SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus .

fencing

The fencing department of the TG Würzburg has been trained by Rita König-Römer since January 1st, 2013 , before Jörg Fiedler trained the fencers.

Gym wheel

In wheel gymnastics, Claudia Geyer from the TG Würzburg became world champion in straight gymnastics with music in 1997.
