The basketball community (BG) BSW Sixers (actual club name BG Bitterfeld-Sandersdorf-Wolfen 06 eV) is the largest independent basketball club in the Anhalt-Bitterfeld district and was formed on June 21, 2006 from the basketball departments of the SG Chemie Bitterfeld, SG Union Sandersdorf and SG clubs Chemie Wolfen founded. The acronym BSW stands for the localities of the participating clubs from B itterfeld, S andersdorf and W olfen. The club is based in Sandersdorf and the hall of the 1st men's team can also be found here. In addition, training units take place in the gym of the August von Parseval vocational school center .

history

The beginnings

The surprising rise of Union Sandersdorf's men's team to the second regional league in spring 2006 was considered the trigger for the establishment of an independent basketball club in the region, which, among other things, was supposed to establish a higher-class men's team. On June 21, 2006, members of the basketball divisions of Chemie Bitterfeld, Union Sandersdorf and Chemie Wolfen launched the Bitterfeld-Sandersdorf-Wolfen 06 basketball community. The suggestion of the team nickname "BSW Sixers" came from Cornelius Damm, who became the first coach of the BSW team.

BSW took the place in the 2nd regional league, which Union Sandersdorf had won through promotion, and was fourth in the table in the 2006/07 premiere season. The team's best thrower in the club's first year of play was US development player Mark Peters, who was signed in January 2007 and achieved a point average of 28.4.

For the 2007/08 season Fritz Espenhahn took over as coach and led the team as the undefeated champion of the 2nd Regionalliga North-East to promotion to the 1st Regional League. The three Americans Elton Coffield, Elijah Rouse and Brandon James as well as center player Thomas Mähne were among the guarantors of the title win.

In the first regional league, the BSW Sixers were up there right at the front and finished the 2008/09 season in fourth place. After the season, former Bundesliga star Keith Gray replaced Espenhahn in the dugout, and in December 2009 another former professional player, Chuck Evans, took over the post. In May 2010, the NBA and the Sixers were due to the likelihood of confusion with the Philadelphia 76ers in litigation, which was ended out of court in 2011.

Promotion to the 2nd Bundesliga ProB

In late September 2010, Evans resigned for family reasons, with former international Stephen Arigbabu being hired as the new head coach. Under Arigbabu's leadership, the season ended in second place in the 1st Regionalliga Nord. Since champions BG 74 Göttingen renounced promotion, the way for the Sixers to the 2nd Bundesliga ProB was free.

In the first season after promotion (2011/12) they landed in the preliminary round of ProB Süd in fourth place before they were eliminated in the playoff quarter-finals against Schwelm.

In July 2012, the Sixers agreed on a cooperation with the Mitteldeutscher BC, which among other things regulated cooperation in the field of young talent. For the 2012/13 season, the Sixers were moved to the northern season. In December 2012 there was a separation from coach Arigbabu. Tino Stumpf was his successor and led the team as eighth in the playoffs, where in the quarterfinals they lost to later champions Bayer Leverkusen .

In April 2013, President Bernd Gleau, who was one of the Sixers' founders, submitted his resignation due to disagreements on the board. His successor in the presidency was the previous manager Maik Leuschner.

In May 2013, Stumpf moved to the post of sporting director, and Torsten Schierenbeck became the new head coach . After eight defeats in a row, Schierenbeck had to go in December 2013, Stumpf returned to the coaching post and kept the team in the ProB. In the 2014/15 season, the BSW Sixers were relegated to the bottom of the ProB Nord table in the 1st regional league.

Back in the regional league

Under Stumpf's leadership, the team finished third in the 1st Regionalliga Nord in the 2015/16 season. In June 2016, the Czech Tomas Grepl was introduced as the new BSW head coach and junior manager at the cooperation partner MBC. He led the team to fourth place in the final table of the 1st Regionalliga Nord in the 2016/17 season.

Back in the 2nd Bundesliga ProB

With a 102:42 victory over Bremen, BSW under Grepl secured the championship title in the 1st Regionalliga Nord on March 18, 2018 and thus achieved promotion to the 2nd Bundesliga ProB. The best scorer of the championship team was the Lithuanian Eimantas Stankevicius (17.2 points per game), closely followed by the American Terrence Williams (17.1 points per game).

In the summer break of 2019, Sebastian Ludwig took over the coaching position, Grepl had accepted an offer from the Czech Republic.
