Chtelnica (German Tellnitz or Wittenz , Hungarian Vittenc ) is a municipality in Okres Piešťany within the Trnavský kraj in Slovakia with about 2500 inhabitants.
geography
The municipality is located in the northern part of the Slovakian Danube lowlands , in the Danube hill country . It is located below the Little Carpathians at the foot of the Klenová ( 585 m nm ) and Vrátno ( 576 m nm ) mountains , on the Chtelnický brook , where a small reservoir was built. The center of the village is at an altitude of 204 m nm and is 20 kilometers from Piešťany and 24 kilometers from Trnava .
history
The place was first mentioned in writing in 1208 as Wytelnize . In 1394 it became a medieval market town. In the 15th century there was a decline due to the plague and war events. In the 16th century the community was settled by Slovak, Croatian and, to a lesser extent, Magyar refugees during the Turkish wars that were taking place in the south of what was then the Kingdom of Hungary .
Until 1918 the place was within Neutra County in the Kingdom of Hungary, then it came to Czechoslovakia and has been part of today's Slovakia since 1993.
