Drahovce (German Drachowitz , Hungarian Vágdebrőd - until 1907 Drahóc ) is a municipality in the Okres Piešťany within the Trnavský kraj in Slovakia with about 2600 inhabitants.

geography

The municipality is located in the northern part of the Slovakian Danube lowlands , in the Danube hill country . It is right next to the Waag , more precisely the Drahovský kanál ; on the other side of the river rises the Inowetz , while to the northwest the Little Carpathians are visible. The place is nine kilometers from Piešťany and nine kilometers from Leopoldov .

In addition to the main town, the municipality also includes the part of Voderady, which is located behind the motorway.

history

The place was first mentioned in writing in 1113 as Debret , then in 1246 as Scepdras . The inhabitants were engaged in agriculture and watermills on the Waag were also detected. In the past, the place was affected several times by the Waag floods, for example in 1813. The danger of flooding did not end until 1961, when the Drahovský kanál was built from the Sĺňava reservoir to the new hydroelectric power station near Madunice .

Until 1918 the place was within Neutra County in the Kingdom of Hungary, then it came to Czechoslovakia and has been part of today's Slovakia since 1993.
