The Little Carpathians ( Malé Karpaty in Slovak ) are about 85 kilometers long, wooded mountain range in western Slovakia and in eastern Lower Austria . They mark the beginning of the Carpathian Arc in the west. It is a mountain range in the geological Fatra - Tatra region .

Characteristic

The Little Carpathians in Austria begin in the southwest, because the Hainburger Mountains to the right of the Hainburger Pforte are already part of this mountain complex.

The Hainburg Mountains in Lower Austria near the border with Slovakia form the westernmost foothills of the Inner Western Carpathians. From west to east, the Hainburger Mountains include: the Pfaffenberg (331 m), the Hundsheimerberg-Hexenberg massif (480 m), the Spitzerberg (302 m), the Schlossberg (291 m) and the Braunsberg (346 m).

To the left of the Hainburg gate, the mountains in the Devín district already belong to Bratislava ( Pressburg ) and extend in a north-easterly direction to the town of Nové Mesto nad Váhom ( New Town on the Waag ). In the west lies the Záhorie lowland between the March and the Little Carpathians ; the Waag touches the Little Carpathians in the northeast, while in the north the small river Myjava forms the border between the Little Carpathians and the White Carpathians .

The highest point is the Záruby with 768 meters. The mountains are a popular hiking area. The European long-distance hiking trail E8 runs on the ridge of the Little Carpathians. While wine-growing areas can be found on the southeast side , the northwest side is characterized by many castle ruins.

In 1976, almost the entire area of the Little Carpathians was declared a protected landscape area of Malé Karpaty (646.10 km²).

There are some caves in the Little Carpathians: At the moment, only the Driny cave near Smolenice is operated as a show cave .
