Stephan László

Stephan László (officially until 1921 István László ) (born February 25, 1913 in Pressburg ; † March 8, 1995 in Eisenstadt ) was the Catholic Bishop of the Diocese of Eisenstadt .

Life

Stephan (István) László was born to a Hungarian father and a Croatian mother who worked as a primary school teacher in the last years of the multicultural Danube monarchy . He lost his father as a result of the First World War. After the collapse of the dual monarchy , his mother decided to return with her son to their home town of Trausdorf and thus to take up Austrian citizenship as a resident of the newly founded Burgenland. The young Stephan / István grew up trilingual.

He attended the grammar school in Eisenstadt, then the grammar school Fichtnergasse in Vienna- Hietzing before he entered the boys' seminar in Hollabrunn and on June 22, 1931 passed the final examination at the federal high school in Hollabrunn . After joining the Vienna Seminary and theology studies at the University of Vienna , he moved in 1933 to the newly built Burgenländische seminary and was on 19 July 1936 priests ordained . He was a cooperator in Schandorf ( Burgenland ) from 1936 to 1937 and was awarded a Dr. theol. PhD. He then studied canon law in Rome from 1937 to 1939 .

From 1939 to 1948 he was secretary at the Apostolic Administration of Burgenland, where on December 5, 1949 he became the office director. On January 30, 1954, he was appointed Apostolic Administrator of Burgenland as the successor to Joseph Schoiswohl . On September 20, 1956, he was appointed titular bishop of Metellopolis and was ordained bishop on November 11, 1956 in Eisenstadt. On October 14, 1960 he was appointed bishop of the newly established Eisenstadt diocese .

On December 28, 1992, his resignation was accepted. Until the introduction of his successor Paul Iby on January 24, 1993, he led the diocese as Apostolic Administrator.

He is buried in the crypt of the cathedral in Eisenstadt .

Stephan László had been an honorary member of the Catholic student association KaV Austro-Peisonia in the ÖCV since 1956 .
