history

Tumulus in the peasant forest

The area around Schandorf was already settled in the old Iron Age and should have been the center of the entire area. In the Schandorf Forest there are 170 barrows that are up to 16 meters high and up to 40 meters in diameter. The graves date from the Hallstatt period .

The village community was first mentioned in documents as "villa Chem" in 1244, when the Hungarian King Béla IV handed over the old Óvár castle to the lords of Csém / Schandorf to rebuild. At that time Schandorf was a German-populated farming village that belonged to the Hungarian border guards and rifle settlement of the Gyepű system .

After the fate of Schandorf was closely linked to the rule of Schlaining under Andreas Baumkircher in the 15th century, the place came into the possession of the Counts Batthyány in 1537 , who repopulated the village , which had been desolate and depopulated by the Turkish wars , with Croatian farmers in 1543.

The municipal seal from 1872 shows a raised grain sheaf with a grain rake crossed in front of it with a scythe and bears the Hungarian inscription "Csémi Község" (community Schandorf). Since 1898 had due to the Magyarization of the government in Budapest of Hungarian name Csém be used.

After Burgenland was annexed to Austria in 1921, Schandorf did not come to Austria until January 10, 1923 as one of the last villages to be re-annexed.

Due to the municipal structure improvement law, Schandorf was united with Dürnbach and Schachendorf to form the large municipality of Schachendorf on January 1st, 1971 . Since January 1st, 1996 Schandorf has been a separate municipality again.

Schandorf – Narda border crossing

Since June 1, 2007, the community of Schandorf has a border crossing to Hungary , which can only be used on foot, by bike or on horseback. From this border crossing you can get directly into the neighboring Hungarian municipality of Narda .

Municipal coat of arms

AUT Schandorf COA.png The coat of arms was awarded to the municipality on July 14, 1998 by the Burgenland state government.

Blazon : “ In gold a red three-mountain of nested hills from which a red tree with a broad crown grows covered with three golden ears.
The three golden ears of corn refer to the Schandorf agriculture, but also promise the vital bread over time and testify to the hard work of the community citizens; the colors red and gold were chosen as a sign of solidarity with the province of Burgenland.
