history
Kemeten was first mentioned in a document in 1475. Smaller skirmishes with the Oberwarter (Felsőőr) and Unterwarter petty aristocrats are reported around the year 1482. It was about the exact relocation of the hotter boundary in the dispute with Georg Baumkirchner. This let the Kemeter population, after being displaced by the Oberwart and Unterwarter, again clear around ten yokes (three hectares) in the direction of Oberwart and cultivate them. (Should the name "Kraufanger", which refers to clearing work, which is said to have only served as a pretext to catch a crow, go back to the year 1482?) In 1496, the process was made in this regard in Eisenburg and the Oberwartern was from Judge Peter Vingarti confirmed the legality of their limit. In the process, however, the Oberwartern were said to have very good contacts with the state judges, which would have brought about a unilateral decision, which in turn led to some minor damage to the Kemeter in Oberwart and vice versa: 32 Kemeter vineyards were cut and cattle driven from the pastures, in return in Oberwart and Unterwart cattle and grain plundered. The Turkish invasions of this time are again blurring the traces.
The area changed hands several times in the 16th and 17th centuries. In the 18th century, Kemeten was one of the so-called contract villages, which means that these villages had to provide their services on the basis of contracts concluded with the rulers. Since Kemeten was an agricultural place, the taxes had to be paid in the form of agricultural products.
Like all of Burgenland, the place belonged to Hungary (German-West Hungary) until 1920/21 . Since 1898 had due to the Magyarization of the government in Budapest of Hungarian name Vaskomját be used. After the end of the First World War , after tough negotiations, German-West Hungary was awarded to Austria in the Treaties of St. Germain and Trianon in 1919. The place has belonged to the newly founded federal state of Burgenland since 1921 (see also the history of Burgenland ).
Until their deportation in 1938, around 200 Roma lived in Kemeten. When the National Socialists came to power , their deportation began, which was completed in 1941. They were interned in the Lackenbach gypsy detention camp or taken directly to the Łódź ghetto . Little is known about their further fate, but it is certain that 47 Roma from Kemeten were murdered in Auschwitz alone. Only 5 of the 200 Roma returned to Kemeten after the war.
In October 2003 there was an application in the local council to put up a plaque to commemorate the murdered Roma, but this was rejected by 14 to 5 votes. The result of the vote suggests that at least seven SPÖ mandataries also voted against the memorial plaque, which provoked sharp protests in some media.
