Grafenschachen is a municipality in the Oberwart district in Burgenland in Austria . The Hungarian place name of the municipality is Vasárokszállás .

history
Like all of Burgenland, the place belonged to Hungary (German-West Hungary) until 1920/21 . Since 1898 had due to the Magyarization of the government in Budapest of Hungarian name Vasárokszállás be used.
After the end of the First World War , after tough negotiations, German-West Hungary was awarded to Austria in the Treaties of St. Germain and Trianon in 1919. The place has belonged to the newly founded federal state of Burgenland since 1921 (see also the history of Burgenland ).

mayor
Mayor was Richard Loidl ( SPÖ ) from 1997 to 2018 . In the direct mayor election on October 1, 2017, Loidl was confidently confirmed in his office with 82.92% and thus entered his fifth term of office. Compared to the 2012 election, it increased by 11.81 percentage points. His competitor Raimund Losert (ÖVP) achieved 17.08%. Loidl died on May 20, 2018 at the age of 69. The office of mayor was temporarily vacant. Marc Hoppel was elected mayor on September 30, 2018.

Personalities
- Hans Peter Doskozil (born June 21, 1970) - since February 28, 2019 the incumbent governor of Burgenland. The former Federal Minister for Defense and Sport (2016-2017) and (from December 21, 2017) Burgenland Provincial Councilor for Culture, Infrastructure and Finance was a municipal councilor in Grafenschachen from 2007 to 2012.
